Uncle Woy: waving or drowning? Or synchronised swimming?

Today’s BIG football question is not about Wayne Rooney (phew), but about Liverpool’s beleaguered gaffer. And the question looks a lot like this:

Is Roy Hodgson out of his depth at Liverpool?

Roy’s shellshocked, twitchy, nervous display on the touchline at Goodison on Sunday – not to mention his deluded post-match comments about how well Liverpool played (!!!) – would indicate that yes, the Liverpool job is all too much for him right now. And I won’t raise an eyebrow when John W Henry sacks him in the next few weeks.

  1. Yes. Right from the day Rafa left I said Hodgson should not get the job and it should go to Manuel Pellegrini (spelled correctly of course). I have no idea what statement Liverpool were trying to make by appointing Hodgson.

    Manuel is still available I think.

    Hodgson got the job cos he is English, the guy is inept. Selling Insua to buy Koncheski? Raul for Aquilani, when a striker is what is needed? Poulson? and frankly Benoyoun is better than Joe cole.. (Antolotti is not stupid for letting J.Cole leave for free and buying Benayoun)

    On sunday, Hodgson subbed Lucas when Maxi is the obvious to sub. Babel was on the bench for too long, should have sub J.Cole and Maxi as they were ineffective in the game… I personally do not think this Hodgson guy is good enough for Liverpool

    bring back aquilani!

  5. […] The cries of “Hodgson out!” from Liverpool’s fans are getting louder and louder. For Everton fans, I imagine being 11th in the table never felt so good. #gallery-1 { margin: […]

    Being a guuner, obviously I am relishing Liverpool languishing at the foot of the league. However, I am most certainly a fan of Roy Hodgson. With a managerial career spanning over 40 years, I feel that it is rather narrow-minded to suggest that he is out of his depth. He has managed at a top level before, taking inter to the uefa cup final, whilst establishing them as a leading team in serie a, at a time when juve, ac, fiorentina and roma were amongst the best teams in Europe. He said himself that the only star player he felt he had was Paul Ince, and to compete at this sort of level, in the most tactically demanding league in the world proves his class. We also all saw what he did at Fulham, transforming a team of serial under-performers to European contenders, whilst cementing themselves as tricky opponenents domestically, with notable wins over both Liverpool and United. As a tactician and a leader, Hodgson fits the bill. Unfortunately he has walked into a team where Carragher and Gerrard are as important as the manager. We have seen the problems this makes in a dressing room at Chelsea. Before Ancelotti out his foot down, there was a post-Mourinho conveyor belt of managers coming in and out of the club. Of course he is nervous, he has come to a club whose history is talked about more than their present, and with some of the most passionnant fans in the country. To come from a timid Fulham to a mighty Liverpool is a big leap, and once he has managed to sort out his players egos and sort out the mess of a squad Benitez left him, decent results will follow.

    he’s like a shrew in a lion’s den: timid. and that’s how the team is playing.

    It’s all very well saying he’s managed at this level and that level – but what has he actually won? Nothing!

    @Jack
    Hodgson did not establish Inter as a leading team in Serie A – his first season was good, his second dreadful. And yes he did well in getting Fulham to 12th (!) in the league last year. Very praiseworthy. By that rationale, perhaps we should go for Steve Coppell, since he took Reading to 7th. Hodgson was also largely responsible for getting Blackburn relegated with only 1 win in his first 14 matches.
    Hodgson is trading on a false history – the European clubs he has managed add up to a who’s-who of teams that would not be fit to grace the Championship, and whose record with Fulham is comparable with Steve McLaren’s at Middlesbrough. And you wouldn’t call him a top manager.
