This was a game of two defined halves: the half without Stevie G (meh) and the half with it (wahay!). Talk about polishing a turd – Gerrard’s second-half hat-trick really put the gloss on Liverpool’s performance.

If we had Liverpool pegged as a two-man team, looks like we were wrong; these days they’re a one-man team (with apologies to Pepe Reina, whose excellence is taken for granted). Heaven help LFC if Gerrard chooses to broaden his horizons. Unlikely, mind.

And you know what grinds my gears? Tackles like the one Napoli defender Salvatore Aronica made on David Ngog last night. A potential leg breaker and a straight red every time. Even worse than the fact he stayed on the pitch, it appeared that Aronia knew exactly what he was doing in going for Ngog’s shin. Dreadful. If that isn’t worthy of a retrospective ban, I don’t know what is.
