Liverpool’s Nathan Eccleston Tweets His Way Into Trouble: Blames Illuminati For 9/11

I’ve always wondered why football clubs allow their players to have public Twitter accounts. I understand the argument that it brings the fans closer to the player, but more often than not, it gives the overpaid young whippersnappers ample opportunity to put their heavily-insured feet in their mouths.

Liverpool youngster Nathan Eccleston is the latest player to score a social media own-goal, courtesy of a Tweet, posted  on the anniversary of the September 11th attack on the US, which questioned the origin of the atrocities.

“I aint going to say attack don’t let the media make u believe that was terrorist that did it. #O.T.I.S.”, he Tweeted. “O.T.I.S.” apparently stands for “Only The Illuminati Succeed”, a reference to the shady, ancient organisation covered in detail in Dan Brown’s best-selling books.

The Anfield bigwigs are rather unhappy with the young striker’s Tweet with a spokesperson saying: “The club takes this matter extremely seriously and senior club officials have informed Nathan Eccleston that we are undertaking an investigation into the circumstances surrounding these postings and will decide on an appropriate course of action.”

However, while the timing may have been tasteless, the youngster is only expressing an opinion held my many, many people. Whether you think he has a point, or is simply a loony, surely he should be allowed speak his mind without the Anfield suits getting their knickers in a twist? Either that or just stop their players from having Twitter accounts.

    It’s only a conspiracy theory.
I’m pretty sure there are worse things he could have said.
You have to remember that the England captain is a man who took the piss out of American tourists just hours after the attacks, so it’s hard to be too judgemental.

  2. Eeny says:

Agreed that the timing was poor, but Liverpool can’t be held to account for one of their players expressing their opinion in a public forum. Surely a disclaimer along the lines of the following would be applied:

The views expressed in this Twitter account are the sole views and opinions of the account holder. They do not necessarily reflect the views of Liverpool Football Club.

  3. chimpo says:

really- “many, many” people believe that?

i would say “a small handful of idiots” believe it

  4. G says:

Regardless of his opinion – and he is entitled to it – what an incredibly inappropriate way for Nathan Eccleston to make himself known to John Henry and the rest of the FSG execs.

Liverpool’s owners aren’t just American, they’re from Boston. The two planes that hit the WTC departed from Boston and were full of people from that city.

On the day that everyone in Boston – LFC’s sister city – was grieving & reliving that awful day, here is an LFC player, in his tinfoil hat, spewing a conspiracy theory and shrugging it off with a glib “took way out of context”.

So, Congratulations Nathan Eccleston, you’ve managed to top a doped-up wife-beating head-case as FSG’s most idiotic athlete.

  5. RyanSSL says:

The American ownership of Liverpool should have him fired.

  6. C says:

Should people get in trouble if they say they believe in Santa, the easter bunny and the tooth fairy too?

Can’t go in just one direction, just because it’s a touchy subject.

  7. H says:

he spoke his mind and in my opinion the truth so where is the offence?!

  8. Montesquieu says:

Just proves that most footballers are as dumb as everyone makes them out to be.

  9. Ron says:

Professional athletes should stick to playing sports, not commentating on world news or events. Most of them haven’t been part of the real world for a long, long time, or ever. They are sports machines.

And twatter is one more nail in the coffin of humanity. The internet run wild is going to fuck us all over. More harm than good for sure.

  10. Chris says:

To most Americans I would think that the words “I aint going to say attack”, sounds an awful lot like excusing whoever was responsible, conspiracy issues aside. It’s like saying, “Don’t get your panties in a twist”, over one of the most horrific events of American history. If that wasn’t an attack I saw that morning I don’t know what is.
And for John Henry, who is looking to expand the Liverpool brand to the U.S.? Seriously bad PR…

  11. Craig Lackie says:

What does Dan Brown have to do with anything? Dan Brown didn’t come up with the concept of the Illuminati.

  12. Alan Duffy says:

    @Craig Lackie

I never said Dan Brown came up with the concept of the Illuminati. I said the subject was covered extensively in his books.

  13. Andy says:

Fuck 9/11 ! That shit was ages ago. Get over it, damn Yanks

  14. r.e.d says:

    ecclestone is 100% right
probably thats why he’s being punished

  15. Chris says:

@Andy: Google 9/11 jumper. This is what you get. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Falling_Man
This is what we think of, what we saw that morning. Yeah, forget it, forget the 96, get over it pussies.

  16. syndex says:

Unless they have previously state a company policy on external communications I can’t see how they can punish him.

  17. Dave says:

Tit. When will these people learn…Just play your futty lad and button it !

  18. Ben says:

@Andy Because ten years is such a long amount of time? You Brits, specifically Liverpool fans, still talk about Hillsborough and make death threats to anyone who questions that it was not 100% the police’s fault (Steven Cohen). I’m not saying this opinion is right, just put it in perspective. Hillsborough was 22 years ago and resulted in 96 deaths, 9/11 resulted 2996.

  19. Ben says:

Honestly, anyone who believes this conspiracy theory shit should have themselves checked.

  20. scouse 1 says:

its not the thought of 911 being an inside job to do with the illuminate its that the lad has got the balls to open his mouth which offends those you it concerns if a lot more players open there mouths instead of waiting for there say check to come through they wouldn’t be branded as cowards

  21. No one says:

Only posted this because of the idiots saying that 911 was a conspiracy theory.

To say: ‘Honestly, anyone who believes this conspiracy theory shit should have themselves checked.’ is ridiculous. This guy must just accept the official story every time. 5 minutes on YouTube will show that no planes hit the towers that day. Controlled explosions using thermite, B12 bomber with sophisticated hologram projection technology projected the ‘planes’. Also, nice to know there are people who think that a bunch of hijackers can break the laws of physics at will, that’s great. Had those planes been real they could not have flown at that speed at ground level. They had to be projected at that speed so that the B12 would go unnoticed and that there would be less video evidence.

As for the people on the planes, can’t imagine what must have happened to them. Can people pay their proper respects by not just accepting the bullshit story you were told. If someone shot you in the head for no reason and told your family you had a heart attack playing football, wouldn’t you have a problem with that? By saying, oh, its just a conspiracy, you truly are a product of their system, you f*cking idiot.

Also, Tower 7 – again, you f*cking idiot. If your house fell down for no reason I’m sure you’d question that.
