This was a game Liverpool just about deserved to win. They bossed the midfield, but missed several good chances to secure the win they desperately needed. Most cuplable was Andriy Voronin, who had a horrible game and must now be sold by the club as soon as they can, to whichever club is foolish enough to take him. Even a 70%-fit Nando Torres was preferable to the ponytailed (emphasis on ‘pony’) Ukraine forward, but then Rafa only has himself to blame for leaving the club with such a paucity of striking options. Surely even the raw David Ngog would have been a better starting option than Voronin though?

Ryan Babel’s lively cameo, capped by a magnificent goal, was a plus point for the Reds, as was the form of the ever-improving Lucas in the heart of midfield – the Brazilian will never be able to pass the ball like Xabi Alonso, but he does have a lot to offer and his partnership with Javier Mascherano – also excellent on the night – promises much. If only Alberto Aquilani can stay fit, the future is not so gloomy at Anfield.

(By the way, Benitez should totally try to sign Lyon’s Aly Cissokho – the left-back looks a terrific prospect.)
