Nothing sparks a good old debate like a team of year, and in this case, the esteemed French newspaper L’Equipe has produced their own best 11 of the year, with five Bayern Munich players making the cut. The Premier League only sees two entries, courtesy of Man City stars Vincent Kompany and Yaya Touré.

The most contentious choice must be Thomas Muller, Bayern’s attacker who is comfortable in any position across the front three or indeed, behind the striker. No doubt many of you will argue for Luis Suarez to get in ahead of the German, or maybe Ibrahimovic?

As for the rest of the team, it’s pretty decent. So what do you geniuses think?

Goalkeeper: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich)

Right-back: Philippe Lahm (Bayern Munich)

Centre-Half: Vincent Kompany (Manchester City)

Centre-Half: Thiago Silva (PSG)

Left-back: Jordi Alba (Barcelona)

Central Midfield: Yaya Touré (Manchester City)

Central Midfield: Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich)

Wide Right: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

Central Attacking Midfield: Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich)

Wide Left: Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich)

Striker: Lionel Messi (Barcelona)

  1. James says:

So good they only need 10 men!

  2. Alan Duffy says:

@James! Ha! Have amended. Although to be fair I reckon they’d win most games with nine!

  3. Geoff says:

Mulller over suarez_cheese eating surrrender monkies

  4. whaddabout says:

    …dem left-back?

  5. Gabe says:

Bastian Schweinsteiger is a very dubious choice. Would replace him with Busquets instead, or Arturo Vidal.

  6. Anonymous says:

but Dortmund players? Reus, Gundogan? And in defense i’d choice Barzagli or Hummels instead of Kompany.

  7. fnorf~ says:

I’d have chosen Courtois instead of Neuer, Dante over Kompany, Alaba over Alba (they probably just forgot the a), Vidal and Busquets over Touré and Schweinsteiger and either Zlatan, Lewandowski or Suarez over Muller.

Muller and Schweinsteiger have both played great at times over the year, but when they were replaced with Kroos, Thiago, Robben, Shaqiri et al. the team didn’t miss a beat. And Martinez was at least as important in winning the CL as Schweinsteiger.

  8. cell says:

Alaba instead of Jordi Alba, obviously!

  9. Ross says:

Muller?! Fair play a very good player but team of the year? I could score goals leading the line for Bayern!

Zlatan would have to get a look in (his ego demands it), as well as Suarez…dare I even suggest Falcao? He was into double figures for Ath Madrid alone during 2013, and is already into double figures for Monaco.

  10. drags says:

Uhhh why would nobody suggest Rooney for Muller?

  11. Anonymous says:

    Rooney sux.

  12. Hootie says:

This list is nothing without Zlatan.

  13. pep13 says:

Zlatan for Muller? Don`t forget, that Muller scored 3 out of 7 goals in the CL semi-final against Barca (Aggregate 7-0). Muller is a world-class Player as seen in the 2010 WC. Every Manager worldwide would be glad to have Muller in his team.
