Manchester City 0-2 Barcelona – Champions League Last 16 – 18th February 2014

Britain Soccer Champions League

After a first-half in which Man City gave as good as they got against the giants of Barcelona, the Citizens saw their hopes of securing a win against the Spaniards all but go up in smoke early int he second-half. With Lionel Messi through on goal, Martin Demichelis brought down his fellow countryman just on the edge of the box, with the ref immediately pointing to the penalty spot as well as sending the City defender off. The Citizens were livid at the decision, particularly as Jesus Navas had arguably been fouled just before the incident. However, Messi converted the spot-kick to give the home side a mountain to climb.

While Barca did create a number of chances soon after (one of which culminated in a goal wrongly disallowed for offside), the home side still threatened in occasions, with David Silva and Edin Dzeko, among others, going close. However, the Catalans sealed the deal at the death when Dani Alves fired past Joe Hart to give Manuel Pellegrini’s side a massive task in Spain in a couple of weeks.
