Manchester City 0-2 Middlesbrough – Fa Cup 4th Round – 24th January 2015
On a bizarre day in English football, Manchester City were another big gun to fall to lower league opposition.
The Citizens, just back from a nice little training trip to Abu Dhabi, started well and created a number of good chances. However, ‘keeper Tomas Mejias proved unbeatable in the Middlesbrough goal. The Citizens did have a couple of decent penalty shouts waved away by referee Phil Dowd but ‘Boro themselves always looked a threat on the break.
After the break, the visitors eventually took the lead, when Chelsea loanee Patrick Bamford bundled the ball home after mix-up between Fernando and Willy Caballero. Second in the Championship and in fine form, Aitor Karanka’s side continued to match the Citizens and after a deflected Frank Lampard effort came back off the woodwork, they secured the famous win. Spanish striker Kike was the man to land the killer blow, firing home after Bamford had been tackled on the edge of the box.
Coming on the back of their 2-0 Etihad defeat to Arsenal, Manuel Pellegrini’s side need to re-group if they are finish the season with silverware.
