Manchester City’s teenage winger Bersant Celina has committed his international future to Kosovo despite having represented Norway at  at Under-15, Under-16, Under-17 and Under-21 level.

The youngster, who made his Premier League debut against Leicester City last weekend, was born in Kosovo but moved to Norway with his family at the age of two, where he proceeded to make it through the national youth ranks.

However, Celina has now officially switched his allegiance back to Kosovo but only after talks with the Norwegian FA broke down recently over the incredible demands both the 19-year-old and his father reportedly made therein.

Despite having barely 13 minutes of first-team football under his belt, the Norwegian FA (NFF) are claiming that Celina would only pledge his future to Norway if he was guaranteed a regular starting role.

As per the Guardian‘s report, which quotes the VG newspaper, Celina and his dad Eduar made a series of demands about playing time, which the NFF promptly baulked at before sending the pair packing.

NFF spokesman Yngve Haavik told VG:

What we can say is that it almost became something like a negotiation regarding playing time and we can’t operate that way.

There is no doubt that we wanted Celina to play for Norway, but that desire has to be mutual, and there can’t be any conditions on playing time.

It is the national coach who has to decide every time who starts the game and who comes on. I think everyone realises that.

Eduar Celina subsequently told the same paper that he believes his son would have made the difference for Norway, but now that ship has sailed (…directly to Kosovo, as it happens):

Bersant was willing to play and make his contribution to the Norwegian country and the national team.

But he could not do that by sitting in the stands or by playing just three minutes.

We will cheer on the national team, though, and wish them all the best.

Once again, he’s 19 years old and has played 13 minutes of senior football.

It would appear that football has raised a generation of feeble-minded young players who simply expect rather than earn.

Should have told he will play him every minute, give him one full cap and then told him to fuck off
