Pep Guardiola’s hopes of leading Manchester City to a league title in his first season with the club suffered yet another hammer blow on Sunday, with the Citizens going down 4-0 away to Everton.

While City had the lion’s share of possession, they struggled to threaten the Toffee’s goal and were sloppy throughout.

An effervescent Everton took the lead on 34 minutes, with Romelu Lukaku slotting home from a Kevin Mirallas cut-back.

Before the break, City did go close, with Bacary Sagna’s seeing his goal-bound header cleared off the line.

After the break, Lukaku returned the favour for his fellow countryman Mirallas, who fired past Claudio Bravo in the City goal.

Midway through the second period, Ronald Koeman gave new-signing Morgan Schneiderlin his first run-out as an Everton player after his £24m move from Manchester United.

On 79 minutes, Everton made it 3-0 via youngster Tom Davies as Goodison Park went wild.

Then, in injury time, things got even better for the hosts (and worse for City), with new-signing Ademola Lookman making it 4-0.

The shock result sees a defensively dismal City in fifth place in the table, a whopping 10 points behind leaders Chelsea and with their title hopes very much hanging by a thread.

The result is also Guardiola’s heaviest league defeat as a manager, and another reminder of just how big a challenge the Spaniard faces in England.

As for Koeman and Everton, they stay seventh, nine points behind the Citizens.
