The Mirror claims that Gareth Barry’s ankle injury (ligament damage to his right ankle), which the midfielder suffered against Tottenham on Wednesday evening, is serious enough to prevent him going to the World Cup. If true, this is terrible news for the player – he’s a big favourite of Fabio Capello – but, let’s be honest, it’s not the end of England’s WC hopes; midfield is an area of the pitch where we have decent strength in depth. Barry is not Rooney – that would be a disaster.
Possible replacements for Barry? Tom Huddlestone fits the bill perfectly.
