Manchester City’s quest to win absolutely everything on offer this season continues after a dramatic penalty shoout-out win against Leicester in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Tuesday.

A mix-and-match Citizens’ side looked to heading for the last four in regular time, after Bernardo Silva fired home after good work from Ilkay Gundogan.

Leicester gave as good as they got in the encounter, with subs Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy both going close.

However, the Foxes would get their equaliser at the death, with Kyle Walker somewhat harshly adjudged to have clipped Demarai Gray in the box, with Vardy converting the resulting spot-kick.

Walker himself was then carded by referee Bobby Madley for a dive in a frenetic end to the 90 minutes.

The ensuing extra-time would bring no more goals, which led to a dramatic shoout-out, with Claudio Bravo the hero, as he had been in the previous round against Wolves.

The ABBA shoot-out saw Christian Fuchs thump home the first, before Gundogan and Yaya Touré both scored. Harry Maguire and Vincent Iborra both then converted their spot-kicks for the Foxes before youngster Lukas Nmecha and Gabriel Jesus netted for City.

Alas, for Claude Puel’s side, their two star-man, Vardy and Mahrez would both then fail to score, with the Englishman hitting the post and the Algerian seeing his effort saved by Bravo, leaving City to progress to the last four.

City boss Guardiola was rather pleased with the win, saying he was “So, so, so, so so, happy” with the performance from his youthful team, with the Spaniard celebrating in front of the travelling fans at the King Power.

The draw for the semi-finals will take place on Wednesday evening, after Chelsea’s clash with Bournemouth and Manchester United’s game with Bristol City.

With Arsenal already through to the last four, the semi-finals could well be a couple of mouth-watering heavyweight clashes.
