Man City came a bit of cropper in their third outing of the nascent Premier League season, following two consecutive commanding victories with dropped points and a rather underwhelming display against Wolves at Molineux in Saturday’s early kick-off.

That said, Raheem Sterling very nearly put the visitors ahead with 20 minutes gone, only for Rui Patricio to make a stupendous save as the City forward’s long-range curling effort seemed destined for the top corner…

Pep Guardiola’s heavyweights then struggled to make inroads against Nuno’s newcomers, who looked unified and fearless against a side who won 32 of their 38 matches on the way to claiming the title last time out.

Indeed, Wolves’ energetic efforts were rewarded in the 57th minute when they nudged themselves into the lead as Willy Boly stooped to head home a deep cross from Joao Moutinho.

Unfortunately, on closer inspection it became apparent that Boly had quite literally used underhand tactics to steer the ball past Ederson.

Despite protestations, the Boly’s dodgy goal was allowed to stand and City were left with an embarrassing predicament to dig themselves out of.

However, the reigning champs trailed for roughly 10 minutes before restoring equilibrium, centre-half Aymeric Laporte sinking a forceful header to score both the equaliser and his first goal for the club…

Wolves upped their game and again defended stoutly while continuing to cause City problems going the other way, eventually holding on to secure a much-deserved 1-1 draw.

It’s early days of course, but it certainly looks thus far that Nuno and his hard-working charges possess more than enough guile and craft to merely spend the season swilling around in the relegation recesses.

It’s worth mentioning that City’s goal shouldn’t have stood either. It was a Sterling dive that led to the free kick

A precious point for Wolves and their energetic fans.
