When the Manchester City fans donned black and red shirts and all turned their backs on the action for the 24th minute of the recent FA Cup tie with Leicester, it was all in memory of Neil Young’s FA Cup-winning strike in 1969 against the same club.

Last month it was announced that Young, a life-long City fan himself, had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and the scarves (City played in red and black striped shirts that day), coupled with the collective show of remembrance in the terraces were chosen as the manner in which the club were to show support for their former hero’s fight for life.

Sadly, the news has filtered through this afternoon that Young passed away earlier today, aged 66.

Young joined City in 1959, and was the club’s top-scorer in the season they won the old First Division (1968) – going on to score a total of 107 goals in 412 matches.
