‘I Will Never Return To Manchester, Not Even On Holiday’ – Carlos Tevez Still Loving Life In England (With Video)

I’ll be the first to admit that my Spanish isn’t great, but from what I can garner from Carlos Tevez’s appearance on the Susana Gimenez show (Argentina’s answer to Oprah or, perhaps more accurately, Vanessa Feltz), it doesn’t seem like the little urchin is enjoying his time in Manchester much.

Said Tevez:

“I don’t have any new friends. I am always with my family and lifelong friends. I don’t even leave my house. I’m the stay-at-home type.

“There is nothing to do in Manchester. The problem is I’m still speaking very poor English. When I finish my contract I will not return to Manchester ever – not even on holiday.

“What’s wrong with the city? The weather, everything. It has nothing.”

Erm, not strictly true. There’s a hat museum.

Speaking of ropey mistranslations, I think can’t help but think that ‘when I finish my contract’ should probably read ‘when I rip the last three-and-a-half years of my contract up and piss off to Madrid at the first available juncture this summer’.

As I say, my Spanish isn’t great.

  2. Sex God says:

    ah yes, Tevez

a once potential future Sex God who failed himself and his followers

  3. Goaltastic says:

Technically the hat museum isn’t in Manchester, it’s in Stockport. It is an excellent museum nonetheless.

  4. JJ says:

He doesn’t say ANYTHING negative about Manchester or England. On the contrary, he refutes that he would prefer to play in Spain or Italy. He says his problems when he put in the transfer request were due to City’s failure (to that point) to get into Champions League and/or win titles. Wife does not seem happy, but that has nothing to do with England or Football. Susan states that Carlos “did things”.

  5. pterodactyl says:

He’s been here 5 YEARS and hasn’t bothered to learn the language?! Mascherano used to moan about this too, so is this a Argentine/South American/having-Kia-Joorobchian-as-a-manager thing, because the Iberian players – Ronaldo, Pique, Arteta, Alonso, etc… – could all speak better English than half the english players after only a couple of years?

And it’s not like he didn’t know what Manchester was like when he signed his City deal!

  6. Tony Low says:

its kind of sad that his whole problem with the premier league is based on his poor english.

is it just me or has he been whining way more since he went to citeh

  8. Sex God says:

its hard being carlos tevez…what a wanker.

  9. fj says:

what minute did he say that, because he doesnt say anything of that sort in the video you posted

  10. dc says:

I don’t know the Argentinian vernacular well but one thing I can tell you is that the blonde haired botexed tv host referred to the daughter’s fur coat as being that of a “zorro”- fox. fox, in the female form, “zorra,” means “whore” in most of the spanish speaking world, at least in spain. in short, i misheard and thought the host was calling his daughter a whore, which was supported by carlos reacting awkwardly and the host re-clarifying herself. oh, botox.

  12. Jamie says:

Actually the hat museum is in Stockport #northernpedantry

  13. dan says:

I hate to say this but Argentinians are known for being the full of themselves pricks of South America, no one really likes them there. So I’m not surprised that he has never even bothered to learn English.

Sure Manchester is not London but it still is a lot better than half of the cities he could’ve ended up in England. The problem is Carlos not Manchester.

  14. Ceezer says:

Carlos Tevez = ungrateful little chippy toothed bastard. Please go back to Argentina.

  15. Chris says:

To be honest, I don’t speak Spanish at all. There are three/four 10-minute parts to this interview and I just plumped for Part 1. If anyone wishes to sit through the whole thing and post a link to the relevant segment, please feel free to do so.

Apologies to all re: the Stockport Hat Museum – a fine, fine establishment.

  16. Alley Al says:

What’s up Pies, I speak Spanish very fluently. From what I can gather from this trilogy snipet, Tevez simply misses his family and that’s all. The communication barrier, the failure to reach champions league, and feeling of loliness is what gives the feeling uncertainty

  17. JJ says:

OK. Watched all of it. 1- The comment about not going back to Manchester even for vacation came about from a discussion about the house he rents in Manchester and the host says she knows people/players that bought homes (as investments), so Carlos tells her he doesn’t buy a house, because he wouldn’t want to deal with being stuck with it. 2- the part about learning English. He has difficultly learning the language (he’s not too bright – he’s a footballer), when he tries to learn (with teachers) they mix up his mind with verbs, tenses, etc. and he just feels like an idiot. So he quits trying to learn. He also feels bad for family when the come visit him because they do not speak English and therefore have nothing to do (unless they have a translator) as he has to be off training etc. 3- He’s obviously cheated on his wife (and they have been separated – trying to get back with her) and I think a lot of his mental state has to do with this and the loneliness that he has being away from his daughters and wife. Wife is being unforgiving and that just adds to his mental anguish.
Not to make excuses for him, but much of the quotes in the media are taken out of context and made to be more sensational than the actual situation. He’s a simple man and he shies away from the Manchester life because he feels dumb for not being able to grasp the language and mix in. At no time does he say he would prefer to play anywhere else. Even when going out to eat, he orders food by what he can say that will be understood.

  18. Chris says:

@JJ: Well played Sir, well played.

  19. NobbysTeeth says:

What a horrible mercenary this guy has been since he set foot in england.A few honest city fans are disgusted with him slagging the town off but the rest sign the petition or cock a deaf un.Ironic that they bang on about all being local but they wont stand up for manchester!

  20. Jesus says:

Dude, did you really post a story with a false attention grabber headline…really? As JJ clarifies, Tevez just misses his family, never a negative comment about Manchester, but it was sad to see the comments posted by ignorant readers, especially the one calling his daughter a whore..really? Unfortunately you Chris, are to blame because your story ignited ignorant comments by ignorant people…..

  21. dave says:

carlos tevez strikes me as a piece of shit, with no loyalty. i would rather live in manchester than buenos aires.

  22. Al says:

Dave have you ever been to Buenos Aires?

  23. Ryan says:

Having taught English as a second laguage (poorly) I know how difficult is is to speak/learn. On top of that, Carlos grew up in the slums of Argentina and surely isn’t well-schooled. Even more, some people just don’t have the capacity to learn new languages–especially after your childhood years have passed (he was 22 when he moved to the UK). Being part of a squad that has very few British nationals (including the coach) certainly doesn’t help. As for getting out and about, when your name is Carlos Tevez, it’s almost an impossibilty to try and enjoy yourself in a football-crazy city like Manchester (or anywhere in Europe for his sake!) without being bombarded by fans or rivals. I feel for the man–even though he can come off as a bit of a whiner.

  24. Jonathan says:

Maybe he just got tired of the Manchester rain filling up the holes in his cratered neck.

  25. Only Tevez Supporter says:

A mercenary? On what basis? The only reason he wishes to leave is because he misses his family. He doesn’t even say anything negative about Manchester (with the exception of “Manchester is not like Marbella”, which it most certainly isn’t). He’s been the best player in England for the past two seasons and has never given less than his all. Tevez isn’t the one who’s ungrateful, it’s his fans who are. No empathy for his predicament and instead throwing condemnatory statements regarding his wealth and his inability at learning a foreign language. And besides, these situations are inevitable when you build a team in the same manner as City are being built.

  26. Kevin says:

tell him to fuck off but withhold his registration as a player!
that will teach the arsehole to stop getting on everybody’s tits!
    he’s just a wanker!

  27. Anabelle says:

People are giving Carlos an unfair treatment. I listened to all 3 parts of the interview, and I do speak Spanish.

Not once he badmouthed Manchester or England. The press took conversation out of context or straight up lied about it.

Please read #17 comments for the full translation.

p.s.: FFS in the future, if you’re going to show a video, please provide cc translation. A lot of English speaking people might not speak Spanish.

  28. No Hooligans says:

Zero loyalty, two faced, dishonest…yet largely still worshipped by fans.

  29. Lacessit says:

How is that headline still there when its insinuations have been exposed as utter tosh? Poor blogging.

  30. Solihull United says:

if the captain says he never wants to come back to manchester i can only imagine what the other players are thinking! i bet toure’s £250,000 check is pissing him off also

  31. Utd says:

What’s with the wife? She looks really hurt.

My spanish is ‘so-so’ and I can’t quite understand what Susana and Carlos are talking in about the from 6:39 and on. Something about jealously, that with fame one gets confused when they have a strong women (I totally got lost there in the interview); and that he know’s now, with getting older, when there is someone who is with him for love.
