Should Fabio Capello waste a World Cup place on Wayne Bridge?

The logic: Wayne Bridge is a bit crap really (he is), so just because he happens to be England’s second-best left-back (arguably, and a long, long way behind Ashley Cole), doesn’t mean F-Cap has to waste a precious World Cup squad place on him.

James Milner, who looks increasingly like a Capello favourite and a good bet to go to South Africa, is versatile enough to deputise at left-back if Cole gets injured (which doesn’t happen much). The same goes for Gareth Barry, who I think can do a perfectly good job at LB. Right now, I’d say both Barry and Milner will make the final 23.

Better to use Bridge’s place to take an extra midfielder or forward, no? For example: I’d rather risk taking a 90 per cent-fit Joe Cole than a 100 per cent-fit Bridge.

Lets not forget Joleon Lescott can play there to

Surely Leighton Baines is worth a shot? Not forgetting that he can play left side of midfield as well as left back, could prove useful if we need to close a game out.

I agree that it might be worth taking another versitile midfielder over Wayne but i think your being a bit harsh on the bloke, hes consistently solid at club and internetional level, he may not be anything special but he does the job every week which is something useful in a international tornament

this actually makes sense… Capello does have around 60 to choose from.. 90% joe cole is better i think…

I feel bridge will do a good job at leftback judging from his recent performance..So taking bridge to the world cup wouldnt be a mistake!

  6. Joe says:

Agree with Dan, Baines is 10 times the player Bridge is. Has a really decent cross in him as well. Fun fact for you: the current Man City back 4 harbours 3 of the players responsible (Bridge, Lescott & Richards for that shocking 2-3 defeat against Croatia at Wembley 2 years ago. The fewer of that shower get in the squad, the better off our collective blood pressure will be.

wayne bridge could walk into the left back position of most of the teams in the PL, but saying that coles reliability makes bridge the most likely player to spend his time sitting out.

Joe Cole HAS to be in the squad, when he’s fit he’s one of the best attacking midfielders and has the touch of magic that the team needs, he is MUST!!! at left back I actually don’t see Barry there…

Rubbish. Wayne Bridge is the worst player i have seen in a man city shirt since Bernardo Corradi. He is a cocky, over-rated loser, who is embarassed week in week out against teams like the mighty Burnley. I am certain within the next year he will be not be playing for England, not for Man city, but maybe Macclesfield
