Demoralised Manchester United fans had feared the worst after their captain, Nemanja Vidic, was stretchered off during that disastrous Champions League exit in Basel during the week. And now, those fears have been realised, with Sir Alex Ferguson revealing that the Serbian centre-half would miss the rest of the season with knee ligament damage.

“Nemanja is out for the season,” said Fergie.  “It is bad news. He will be a loss. I thought (the injury) was a bad one when I saw it.”

“(Vidic) sees the specialist on Monday to map out the progress of when he has the operation. It won’t be immediate because we have to let the swelling come down.”

This season, despite recently stringing together a series of 1-0 wins, United haven’t looked as solid as they have in previous campaigns, with their defence not always convincing. Therefore, the loss of Vidic will surely make it even harder for the red half of Manchester to catch their noisy, and wealthy neighbours as they run away with the title.

A central defensive panel of Jonny Evans, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and and an ageing Rio Ferdinand may not be strong enough for Fergie’s liking, with a move in January for a top quality centre-half surely on the cards. Would United go for Gary Cahill?

United NEED a new midfielder and a center back.

Gary Cahill should be the man.

  2. Tom says:

Gary Cahill clearly isn’t doing that great this season, not sure why everyone is going on about him so much???

  3. Fletch says:

Dunno why a quality centre-half and Gary Cahill were mentioned in the paragraph. Hes not that good. the only thing in his favour is that he’d be cheap.

Utd have needed a couple of good midfielders for ages now. if they bought well Jones could drop back. problem solved.

Carrick and Gibson arent Utd players. Lets see how good Paul Pogba is, he cant be any worse than those two.

An RB is also an option as that will free up Smalling or Jones for CB.

A CM feels like a must-do at this point, whether it be getting more games for Pogba or Morrison or buying someone. The averageness of the midfield is holding the team back.

Vidic = our best defender by miles… what a disaster.

Gary Cahill top quality??? No chance.

fuck gary cahill, and fuck anyone elso who is english. it pains me to say this as an englishman, but as much faith as i have in fergie, he needs to listen. our squad isnt a man utd squad. its average, for the most part! spend spend spend, and the results will come!

way way way way off. get ahold of yourself man! not only did fergie say he’s not looking to sign a new defender, why in the world would he sign cahill?
