Below-par performance by a United team missing heavyweights like Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Dimitar Berbatov. They had plenty of chances to at least snatch a draw, but Rustu Recber stayed strong in the visitors’ goal, especially in keeping out late, goalbound attempts by Federico Macheda and Wes Brown.

The loss ended a 23-run undefeated run in Europe, and so the Prem champs still need a point at Wolfsburg to top their group – though given that some big teams look like finishing second in their groups, that might not be such a good thing.

Positives for Fergie? I thought Gabriel Obertan looked very raw but at least he tried to make things happen – with mixed results – and was more involved than Macheda and Danny Welbeck. United’s fans have warmed to the young French winger, and I can see why – he doesn’t hide, and can only get better.

And  the negatives? Anderson had a poor match – it’s a worry that he’s appeared to go backwards since last season; the sooner Owen Hargreaves returns, the better. And I thought Ben Foster might at least have got a hand to the goal, slight deflection or not.

I watched the game last night and my recurring thought through-out was ‘Ronaldo would have shot then’. I must have said it to myself about 20 times.
