Let sleeping dogs lie and all that? Not in Glen Johnson’s little book of happiness, oh no. The Liverpool and England defender has booted some life back into the ailing Suarez/Evra debacle today by talking about the incident, at length, in the Daily Mail.

In the article, Johnson blames Patrice Evra for the whole handshaking controversy, saying:

“Evra was clever at Old Trafford. Because – I’m not being funny – but if I wanted to shake your hand I would stick it right out in front of me like that. But if my hand is down here, almost by my side, then it’s because I really don’t want to shake your hand.”

“Luis didn’t shake his hand because Evra’s hand was down there. What else is Luis supposed to do? Would you go to shake someone’s hand if their hand is way down there by their side? Course not. But then, because Luis didn’t do it, Evra has pulled him back by his arm as he walked on, as if to say to everybody: “Look, I wanted to shake his hand and he didn’t…”

“He’s following Luis with his eyes as if to say: “Right he’s gone, he’s gone (past me) so I’ll pull him back now…” Evra probably stayed up all night thinking about how to do that. The whole thing was ridiculous.”

The former West Ham man then goes on to brand former Man Utd great Paul McGrath, who had suggested that rather than wear that infamous Suarez-supporting t-shirt, Johnson should have thrown his on the ground, a ‘racist’. He said:

“The McGrath thing … that’s actually racist. Saying what he said is racist. He is only saying that to me because I was the only black lad wearing the T-shirt. He’s targeting me because of my colour.”

“Listen, I’m my own man. If I have something I want to say or do then  I will do it. The reason I wore the  T-shirt is because I know 100 per cent Luis Suarez is not racist. He is one of the lads in the team that I get on with best of all at the club.”

You can read the whole thing here.

Whatever Johnson’s thoughts on the matter, surely for everyone’s sake, it would have been more sensible to move on from the incident rather than start the whole debate again?

i dont think so. if your friend has been branded a racist, you should do anything you can to defend him.
the only problem i have is the refusal to accept a mistake was made. suarez made a comment he didnt understand the connotations of, and that should be apologised for. but glen is doing the right thing in stating that luis suarez is not a racist.
and he also has a point about the handshaking thing, evra was being tricky about it.

  2. C7 says:

also, he was asked a question and answered it. players dont just make volatile statements without being pressed on the matter.

  5. QPR says:

Its only a matter of time before Terry signs for them!

If my friend was a racist then he wouldnt be my friend any more, they only look dumb trying to defend it.

As with everything Liverpool, its always someone else’s fault.

  6. nice says:

    FUCK PATRICE EVRA!

  7. noiz says:

    big deal
he is actually right about it

How could he not understand the connotations of ‘I did it because you are black’ and ‘I don’t talk to blacks’. Argue all you like about cultural differences but those are racist statements. Suarez may not be racist per se, but you can’t argue that he couldn’t know what he was doing.

Apart from that, Johnson is an idiot. The FA should now be fining Liverpool for failing to let this go. And if that doesn’t do the trick, take points off them. The whole thing is a farce because of the way Liverpool have dealt with it.

  9. Lyle says:

This is the media’s fault… they keep asking people questions about this thing. At least there is some evidence now that Suarez isn’t racist. Glen Johnson says so.

  10. Sameer says:

QPR, the point here is, Luis is not ‘Racist’ Problem?

  11. QPR says:

Yes he is, hes been found guilty and hes also an idiot who wouldnt shake hands.

So he calls Evra something racist
Evra goes to shake his hand and put a lid on in
Suarez proves he is a moron as well as a racist by refusing.

Somehow to all the idiots, this is all supposed to be Evras fault for using a jedi mind trick to make Suarez not shake his hand.
Not only that, Liverpools behaviour has been disgusting from start to finish.

  12. Ben says:

Is the notion that “he’s not a racist because I like him and I’m black” not a bit…racist?

  13. Mr. Sparkle says:

All these idiots deserve a good kicking in the ass.

  14. Gaz says:

What i find strange is how Evra was so supprised the first time Suarez claims he called him the name. Yes you would expect him to be supprised the first time he was called it, but Evra claims that he had already called him that multiple times just before, yet didnt react.

I know we will never know the full story and i am prob reading too much into it, but does seem strange to me.

I dont think there is enough evidence to prove Suarez guilty, i dont see how anyone can think there is, so i dont think he is guilty and i dont see how anyone can think he is.

    Stupid Knobhead

  16. Alexander says:

Not shaking someone’s hand is not racist, irrespective of the color of the guy in front of you. Suarez thinks he was wrongly accused of racism, it’s his right. The FA thinks otherwise, be it, Suarez sat down his suspension. He still has the right to believe he is not guilty, and the right not to shake hands as a sign of protest. The media does not like it, so be it. I watched the video again and I believe Evra did set him up. I am with Suarez on this one, and I am not a Liverpool fan.

  17. Mr. T says:

    @ALexander – Hear Hear.
@Johnson – good on him to come out with what he believes to be true.

You cant accuse someone of being racist and then expect people, who dont believe the same to be true, to just not say what they feel. Besides I believe the ‘racist’ v/s ‘person who made a remark viewed as racist’ debate was exhausted in another thread on WAATP. What Johnson is by and large referring to is the way Evra acted during the handshake, and its good that finally someone who was there actually saw what happened had the balls to come out and say it.

  18. Johnny John says:

He’s been found guilty of being a racist? No he hasn’t, and as far as I know there isn’t a thought-police yet. He’s been found guilty of racially charged abuse. By your logic anybody who ever said anything that could be considered racist is a Hitler. And that’s dumb.
