Oops he did it again. Very little that can be said to defend or justify Ashley Young’s dive. A fine player, he is rather tarnishing his name with this kind of rubbish.

Then again, after getting away with it against QPR (and the FA refusing to rescind Shaun Derry’s red card), who can blame Young for trying it again.

    Absolutely disgraceful.

  2. Kacker says:

    Shocking.

  3. Redskywalker says:

AS long as you expose the other clubs divers with the speed you’ve delivered this one.

  4. Alan Duffy says:

@Redskywalker Too often these kind of issues get totally taken over by tribal club allegiances. Let’s forget about which clubs the players who dive play for and let’s just condemn them for cheating?

  5. matty says:

I said it before and I’ll say it again: cheating little cunt

  6. Caleb says:

If you compare it with the one against QPR, he has the EXACTLY the same diving motion.

  7. Anonymous says:

and for those saying there is contact – no, there isn’t

  8. Richie says:

Why would he stop diving when he keeps getting penalties and free kicks for it. These dubious decisions have probably been worth 10-15 points for United this season!

  9. Mr. Sparkle says:

The worst part is that he did this against his old club.

  10. yaboya says:

This poor excuse for a human being gets lucky to be allowed receive a lot of wealth and this is how he reacts.A just god,if he exists, shoild not allow it.

  11. Jamie says:

There was contact but it was after he’d started diving. He stuck his leg out to catch Clarkes foot on purpose. Also, Dwight Yorke is a joke of a commentator, incredibly biased. I can’t believe he actually said it could be a dive but still a penalty.

  12. LeaveIt says:

    The FA should start functioning.

    Bring technology!

  13. Jamie says:

One place where scottish football is ahead of the premier league. Sone Aluko got a retrospective ban for diving. Why don’t we do that?

  14. vic says:

    CHEAT CHEAT CHEAT

  15. LeaveIt says:

    @Jamie

    Great idea!

  16. ericsson says:

    Ashley Young > Tom Daley

  17. Graham says:

That wasn’t a dive, that was just Young’s pre-goal celebration, the flopping fish.

  18. F. says:

Stuff like that makes me always watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Et2nazK7r7s Happens way too often if you ask me.

  19. Mr. Sparkle says:

    @Jamie

Great idea, but you’d probably have to ban majority of the squads of Arsenal, Manchester United and a few Liverpool players.

  20. Ross says:

    @Matty…couldn’t agree more.

Until something is done retrospectively (as is the case with dodgy tackles) then players or cheats as I like to call them will continue to go over with the slightest or even no contact if it means the possibility of a pen.

I will take the Andy Carroll incident v Newcastle to provide an example. If Carroll cons the ref in that instance, he gets a pen and no doubt Tim Krul would of been sent off…retrospectively we know that Carroll dived, give the cheat the same ban that Krul would of got in that instance, straight red is 3 games.

Back to Young, if the FA had of stepped in after the Derry red card and sanctioned a ban then he wouldn’t of been able to cheat Villa.

    …just a thought.

  21. Jamie says:

    @Mr. Sparkle
Fine by me. Should teach them not to cheat.

  22. Terry Shedingham says:

There was *NO* contact. Young tried to kick out to create contact, but the Villa player got his leg out of the way in time!

  23. dc says:

somebody needs to make a gif combo of this and john terry’s salmon huck

  24. Controversial Guy says:

    Didn’t see a similar 3 articles in 5 minutes slating Dzeko’s dive against Sunderland…

    Shame on Young though

  25. sb says:

    fucking cheating cunt

  26. Maccer says:

Players think that they can get away with falling over theatrically (aka diving) as ‘contact’ however minimal has now become the buzzword for whether or not it is acceptable to hit the deck. The FA rules really need to be scrutinized and change in relation to how modern day footballers ‘win’ decisions. However i thought there was slight (if that) contact but if you don’t make a mountain out of a molehill it seems as though you won’t get anything. The gifs perspective makes it a hell of a lot worse but it is shambolic

  27. Ben says:

The GIF shows when Clark moves his leg away, Young actually stretches his leg out to try and find it. FA should ban him for the rest of the season.

  28. Red_Devil says:

He needs to be sent down to the reserves for this type of action, i’m going to disagree with SAF on this one, it was not a penalty. The bad thing about sending Young to the reserves, Nani will take his spot…

  29. KKK says:

I thought it was only the Johnny Foreigners that dive?

  30. KKK says:

The funny part is that he already lost control of the ball and it’s 5yds away, but the referee still gives a pen.

  31. Micka says:

What would Ferdinand or vidic say to young if he pulled that out in training? I doubt he’d have the balls to do it in the first place. Fucking dive. Ps I love united.

  32. Tom says:

Was watching the match today and I let out a groan when Young went down, not just because it sickened me (which it did) but because I knew we’d get a whole barrage of “omg refs r so biased towards man u!” messages all week.

i’m a forest fan but can safely say there’s no hidden agenda or man united conspiracy.. these decisions tend to be given more to home teams, it’s just when it’s a big team (particularly united) it’s highlighted a lot more.

  33. tonys says:

There is foot-to-foot contact blind people. But it is a dive.

  34. robert says:

this video is speeeded up if you capture the photo frame by frame you will see there was contact and for all you calling a cheat what about carroll v newcastle

  35. Rob says:

    Contact doesn’t mean it’s a foul,
Young could be the biggest cheat in the game right now, he’s been getting away with this for years

  36. Mr. Chopper says:

There’s been quite a lot written about the rising of the term “contact”, and why it suddenly means a penalty. In the olden days it was “if the player done a foul inside the penalty areas yeah”, but that doesn’t really matter any more. The rules for 2011-2012 clearly state:

A direct free-kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following six offences in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:

    • kicks or attempts to kick an opponent.
    • trips or attempts to trip an opponent.
    • jumps at an opponent.
    • charges an opponent, even with the shoulder.
    • strikes or attempts to strike an opponent.
    • pushes an opponent.

A direct free-kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following offences:
    • holds an opponent.
    • spits at an opponent.
    • slides in an attempt to play the ball when it is being played or attempted to be played by an opponent (sliding tackle).
    • handles the ball deliberately, except for the goalkeeper in his own penalty area.

A penalty kick is awarded if a player commits any of the aforementioned offences inside his own penalty area, irrespective of the position of the ball but provided that it is in play.

So it’s essentially down to interpretation of “careless, reckless or excessive force”. Sticking a leg out would be “careless”, no? Also of note is “irrespective of the position of the ball”, so it doesn’t really matter if Young had let the ball get away from him.

Now, I certainly didn’t come here expecting to stick up for Young (that’s a dive of the worst order – Gerrard-esque, one might say), but he hasn’t really done anything wrong by the rules of the game. Yes, that’s shit. Yes, they should be changed to stamp this out. But Fergie was right – he went down easy but it’s still a penalty.

  37. Redskywalker says:

@AlanDuffy Yeah I agree. As a United fan I’m extremely embarassed by what he’s done in the last 2 games. The QPR game made me sick.
Expose him all you want, its what he deserves, but everyone seems to be jumping onto this because its United.

Rememeber when he dived for England some months ago? I don’t think he had played a game for United back then. Like I say, as long as every club’s diver is exposed like this, then theres no problem.

Its clear Fergie doesn’t like what he’s done either, but you can’t exactly go out in public and slam your own player, can you?

  38. Nuno says:

The reason these dives are being exposed more than others is because they could help decide the title. In both games United won by more than 1 goal, but against QPR it meant a sent-off and in both games it was the opening goal, which is always very important for morale (in this game it was only after 6 minutes).
And about Carroll, as I recall he was booked for his disgraceful dive, and no penalty was given, so no big reason to complain, only to laugh at.
That said, if United manages to win at the Etihad, this had no influence, but if City wins and United win the League for only 2 points… well, these dives will be remembered. (ps: neutral fan here, although hoping City doesn’t win the league, but still you gotta look at the facts… and that was disgraceful)

  39. dom says:

i feel embarrassed just watching it.
    absolutely disgraceful.

  40. david says:

solution – don’t pick him for england (we shouldn’t have cheats)and secondly the REF should be put back to school boy matches.

  41. SomeBloke says:

Watch the clip carefully, Clarks left foot stands on Young,s right foot bringing it to a complete stand still. This throws his upper body forward. As soon as his right foot is free, it flies up and to the right with the momentum. You can see it better from the main camera angle – this was no dive.

  42. jowite says:

    @somebloke
I agree that there was contact with young’s right foot .
Looking asst the main camera(like you suggested )
I can see the defender standing still and
young’s momentum Carries him into the defender.
Contract but no foul.what follows next is just disgusting.

And before anyone wants to change the subject by taking cheap shots
At my punctuation, my smartphone is having problems with this comment box

  43. Mr. Angry says:

this arsehole is a disgrace! manure should be docked 10 points

  44. somebloke says:

    @jowite
No, Clark steps to his left and puts his weight down on Youngs foot. His foot trapped Young’s body is thrown forward as if over the handle bars of a bike when the brakes jam.
A split second later Clark lifts his foot but Youngs foot still can’t go forward but goes the only way it can, straight upwards. Causing Young to nose dive into the ground. Very difficult to do on purpose.

  45. James says:

Young does not try follow the path of the ball. Instead he moves into the defender to make contact. The defender pulls his foot away and Young stretches to make contact. This is a contact foul by the attacker on the defender, not vice versa, and it’s followed by a spectacular dive for effect to ensure a pen is given.
Now the demo is out, expect other attackers to use the same technique, I hope it’s against United.
