Wayne Rooney Wonder Volley vs Man City Named Best-Ever Premier League Goal (Video)

By Alan Duffy

He may have only come second to Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie in the Football Writers’ 11/12 Player of the Year award, but Man Utd striker Wayne Rooney will be more than pleased to have garnered the award for the best Premier League goal ever. The award was voted for by fans and to be fair, the top three are all superb goals.

The strike which won it was Rooney’s magnificent, gymnastic volley against Manchester City at Old Trafford last February, which took 26% of the votes…

Dennis Bergkamp’s sublime reverse turn and shot against Newcastle in March 2002 came second, courtesy of a 19% share of the vote…

While another Arsenal icon, Thierry Henry, came in third, with 15% of the votes for his goal against Manchester United in 2000. (Apologies for the poor quality of the video…)

all three goals are magnificent. i’d still rate bergkamp’s highest though. rooney hit the ball with his shin and henry didn’t hit the ball the way he wanted so it got the spin to the far corner, you can see that in the video as well. only bergkamp managed to do exactly what he had in mind. so for me, his is definitely the best ever as his execution was perfect.

Criminal that Di Canios volley isnt in the top 3. I’d put it at number 1. Im not a Hammers fan im a Manchester United fan but the goal was perfect in every way.

  3. Niiiicko says:

    All three are fantastic goals.

I was amazed Trevor Sinclair’s overhead kick wasn’t there – then I realised it was an FA Cup goal. Still loads better than Rooney’s shinny effort (as good as it as).

A part of me thinks 2 reasons it won is a) it’s Rooney and b) these polls always favour more recent things, eg. music polls always have Robbie Williams’ ‘Angels’ and crap like that as the best songs ever written. Try that in 20 years and we’ll see who polls higher, Williams or Queen/Beatles/Dylan etc etc.

Here’s some crackers from 92-93 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhGvYcqJRKk Villa scored some special ones.

I agree about Di Canio too. Anyone else got any good alternative nominations?

@plops there was a vote where they had the 10 finalists, which were all pretty special.
Other goals that didn’t make it on the list:
Georghe Kinkladze’s awesome dribble vs Southampton
Mario Stanic – scored an absolute stormer on his first or second game for Chelsea, what a false dawn that was :(

  6. asdfgghh says:

should be cisse vs chelsea now ;)

  7. ljharvz says:

Surely Le Tissiers goal vs Newcastle would have been worth a shout.

  8. Al says:

Cisse and Crouch would gatecrash the list now.
Bergkamps was better than Rooney’s, he was involved at the start of the move as well which made it all the sweeter

  9. ferguson and webb says:

best goal? those idiot who’s vote it.

  10. Russ says:

amusing this being announced just after Cisse’s goal – would surely win it hands down!

  11. Gaudi says:

    SHINNED IT!

  12. lfc_man says:

Rooneys might be best of the season, certainly not best ever. Fans voting usually doesn’t work. Its like Justin Bieber winning an MTV music award for album of the year.

  13. Congo says:

    Bergkamp for me.

  14. kjk says:

Rooney’s was a rather easy overhead as the ball kind of held up for him. Credit for taking it but this type of bicycle kick is much more difficult.

    yeboah

  20. muppets says:

di canio all day every day.

This is just a reflection of club tribalism

  21. DJ says:

That Bergkamp goal is pure footballing pornography.

  22. Anonymous says:

Mis-timed shin straight in the corner, didn’t mean it, shouldn’t be there

  23. Andy Carroll's Ponytail says:

Either Yeboah’s against Wimbledon or Le Tissier’s against Blackburn. But then again, they weren’t playing for the BIG clubs so probably weren’t considered eh? (Apologies to Leeds)

“Rooney all day and all night long”
That’s what that 60 year old prostitute was paid to do!
