Not the most talented of players to play under Fergie, Scottish midfielder Darren Fletcher still managed to carve out a key role in some of the Red Devils’ recent successes. However, last December, the tough-tackling star saw his career put on hold courtesy of a case of ulcerative colitis which, according to his manager, may now spell the end of his playing career.
Speaking at the unveiling of new-signings Nick Powell and Shinji Kagawa, Fergie said:
“He (Fletcher) has not started training with us. He has obviously got great challenges ahead.”
“We are happy to be patient but he won’t be starting the season. It is unfortunate because he is such a magnificent professional and such a nice lad. If it doesn’t work for him, he knows he has a position at the club anyway.”
To be honest, that doesn’t sound good for the 28-year-old dynamo. However, let’s hope he can recover fully ASAP and get back to what he does best.
