19-year-old Brazilian attacker Lucas Moura was within touching distance of becoming a Man Utd player when nouveau riche PSG jumped in to gazump the Old Trafford giants courtesy of a whopping €45m bid for the player.

According to Moura’s agent, Wagner Ribeiro, a deal had already been agreed for the Sao Paulo youngster to join the Red Devils. He said:

“Everything was agreed between Sao Paulo and Manchester UnitedThe contract had been written and just needed to be signed. But then Leonardo called me and asked to talk to Lucas.  They talked. Leonardo was helped by the fact he is Brazilian. He was very gentle with Lucas.”

“The possibility of living in Paris – a much more pleasant city than Manchester – also influenced his decision. But it was PSG’s project that impressed Lucas.”

The last-gasp move came as a bit of a shock to Fergie, who said:

“I find it quite amazing that a club can pay €45m for a 19-year-old boy.”

Although, let’s not forget Fergie did splash out £25.6m (around €32m)  for an 18-year-old Wayne Rooney back in 2004.

Anyway, with Lucas Moura joining the Galacticos of PSG, Fergie is still pushing for Robin Van Persie, with the Gunners apparently wanting £25million for the Dutch striker. But with Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck, do United really need another striker?

    What project?
You mean the truckload of money he would be receiving for sporadic starts during the season?

These agents and players are fooking mad.

    true about the Rooney thing

but then again he was already in the premier league and proven due to his fine performances for Everton, that and the fact he’s English which adds a bit more to the price! (just think Andy Carroll)

I was thinking the same about the Rooney!

Some clubs don’t really care about the price of an up(Chelsea mainly, PSG with Lucas), while others won’t cough up a reasonable price for a proven talent(RM with Modric, Song with Barcelona, etc). Most of the clubs could justify some of the proven talent in jersey sales and licensing, but they log jam when they would like to leave the club over salary demands/transfer costs. I’d hate to see a salary cap but damn, Andy Carroll might actually be worth 35M when this is all said and done(thinking of Andy Carroll).

It is a lot to pay for an unproven player from the Brazilian league, which can be pretty flaky. That, and I can’t think of the last time a Brazilian player thrived in the Premier League. They tend to do better in Europe.

And United don’t need RVP. I don’t know what that’s about.

Can’t wait for the new season to start.

  8. Leo Ronaldo #19 for Real Barcelona FC says:

We’ll see how good Lucas is. He clearly has to be incredible to get signed to Man Utd so maybe this will help his development anyway since the French League is not as good as the EPL. Im a Man Utd fan so i would love to see them capture RVP i think with him, Manchester United will have the best front line in the world. Javier and Welback dont really impress me the way RVP does.

I feel Sir Alex is being a bit stubborn here, he has no problem spending what looks like £20-£25mil for a 29 year old injury prone player who really would probably never have more than two good seasons and then be worth nothing. It’s the same with Berbatov, £30mil and really what has he given, not much and now he’s past it and worth nothing, it would be the same with Van Persie who we don’t even need.

Why couldn’t Man Utd just go the extra mile and splash out for a player who looks like he could realistically be the best in the world one day, it’ll be 10 years until he’s the age Van Persie is now. He would even have a monstrous resell value for a decade at least. He may be unproven but he sparkled at the olympics and he is certainly more well known than Ronaldo was when we bought him, that is the kind of signings we need to be making, not some Arse goooner wash up.

  10. Andy Carroll's Ponytail says:

@Dave: I think City’s title win haa shaken SAF more than he wants to admit. And his pursuit of RVP at the (possible) expense of Lucas just shows how much more desperate he is to wrench back the title than build a title winning team for the year after the year after the year after.

Besides, the amount mentioned that Utd offered seemed pretty fair for an unproven 19 year old from a country with expensive proven flops.
