“Take this, I won’t be needing it where I’m going…”

A statement has just gone live on the Arsenal website to confirm that the club have agreed a deal with Manchester United over the sale of Robin van Persie – here it is, all 41 words of it:

“Arsenal Football Club can confirm that terms have been agreed for the transfer of Robin van Persie to Manchester United.

“Van Persie will travel to Manchester on Thursday in order to agree personal terms and complete a medical ahead of the proposed move.”

It’s not yet confirmed, but we’ve reason to believe that the fee is somewhere up around the £24-million mark, which isn’t bad money whichever way you look at it – especially as he only has one year left on his contract. However, some of the £24 million may or may not be belated compensation for Mikael Silvestre*.

Well then, it’s (almost) done. What do we make of that Pies fans?

As a Utd fan, delighted. We don’t need a striker but who’s going to argue at this signing? It’s the first time we’ve signed an established world-class player since, arguably, Veron. Let’s just hope it doesn’t tuen out the same way as that.

From Arsenal’s point of view, whoever was in charge of this deal needs a big bonus. £24m for a 29 year old with 1 year left on his contract? Cracking business. They should get that money and sign Llorente.

    traitor

    hope he fails

    awesome deal for arsenal

  4. KingB3113 says:

Finally some big transfer news! Probably the most shocking move since Torres’s move to Chelski

  5. Captain Obvious says:

Good value for Arsenal. Not sure what Man U is doing signing a player that age for that much, but it’s their money. Still a bitter taste about the way our captain did us, and going to a rival.

Hey Robin. You’re a punk. Don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out. Seriously, you’d probably sustain another injury and the deal would be nixed.

    Long live Lukas Podolski.

  6. jackie wilshere says:

really wanted RVP to end up in italy rather than another club in england. selling your captain and best player to not only tital rivals but your biggest competitor over the last 20 years, how embarrassing.

    but life goes on

good money for someone who has had one season in 8 where he wasnt on the treatment table. great money for someone who has a year left on their contract and is 29.

I am interested to see after 6 weeks of him pouting around wondering how it going to affect him on the field. I find it almost impossible for him to reflect the form of last year this season no matter what shirt he would have played in.

  9. OG says:

Financially, Arsenal wins out. Hard for United to turn down that sort of class though it is a risk.

  10. Allan says:

Since he dropped the bomb and said he wouldnt stay Ive been in two minds what I wanted to happen with this.

RVP will either win Unite the league or get injured and barely feature you just dont know.

Im far more gutted that Song a player who had declared his desire to stay with the club and sign a long term contract has been told they will sell him if they get the money they want.

As much as i dont agree with how chelsea and then Man city bought trophies the way we are going about things is a total joke. Its all about getting that champions league money, they dont want anything more than 4th place and a transfer market profit.

as a utd fan i dunno what fergie is thinking, this just seems like a waste of money to me, but who am i to question the almighty

  15. Thomas says:

I’m hoping this is Berbatov 2.0, with more injuries. Great business for Aresnal though, even for someone that is highly regarded. I think the Podolski deal makes this deal look like a great value. I think we got the last healthy season out of this horse, so oatmeal is better than no meal.

  16. West End Blues says:

Great signing, gonna give fergie options as well. This signing is so unlike him, makes you wonder whether he might be treating himself to a going away/retirement present. I mean I never thought they’d offer anything above 20m for him.

  17. Anonymous says:

No matter how you look at it, this is a great move for everybody. Arsenal just got their cash back for purchasing a bunch of players. Van Persie can play for a title which would have never happened with Gervinho and Walcott next to him and he also gets to take a rest once in a while since there are more strikers at united… one of the things they really did wrong at Arsenal. A football career is short, those Arsenal supporters should realize that they ain’t going to win a title in van Persie’s active football career… They shouldn’t hate him for making this move, it’s just stupid.

  18. Mr. Chopper says:

So what’s with that “nobody over the age of 25 and most certainly not for £25m” policy? Cut to RVP scoring 40 goals and United winning the league…

  19. pray4muamba says:

hes either gonna make it or break it this year. and will be shown little love

  20. Mike says:

Seems these days as soon as Arsenal name a player as captain hes out the door!

  21. Al the gun says:

Aka risk transfer to utd in financial terms, but better considering thier IPO bust. Better deal for arsenal overall, i’d say…

  22. HotSpur922 says:

    what can I say?

this is great news for Spurs….

can’t wait to finally finish above arsenil for once.

As much as I hate to see RVP leave to Man Yawn, £24m for a 29 year old with 1 year left on his contract is a great business for us. We all knew he was going to go anyways….I hate the fact he didn’t leave to Juve but of all teams those suckers.

The real issue is how are we going to spend the money. Are we going out and buy some reinforvement in other areas, like defence or sit on the money for end of year’s “we made this much money shit.”

Personally, as much as I like RVP and appreciate his immense contribution last season, losing Song (as reported by many media outlets) would be a big catastrophy. In my opinion he was the lynchpin of Arsenal’s revival and relative success last season. We can replace RVP with Podolsky and the creativity of the two Spanish midfield dynamos… but Song? I honestly don’t see anyone replacing him. He is the unsung hero of Arsenal at the moment (the fact that Barca came for his signature says a lot about his talent). Please keep your faith in the Gunners and KEEP singing SONG!!!!
