Man Utd draw up goalkeeper wishlist – French stopper is No.1 priority

The pose that has come to be known as ‘The Foster’

Manchester United have drawn up a stellar list of goalkeepers as possible replacements for Edwin Van Der Sar and busted flush Ben Foster.

Fiorentina’s Sebastian Frey, Lyon’s Hugo Lloris, Schalke 04’s Manuel Neuer, Celtic’s Artur Boruc and Inter Milan’s Julio Cesar make up the five man shortlist, with French shot stopper ‘extraordinaire’ Lloris said to be at the man at the top of the pile.

After recent stories surfaced that United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to instigate a huge personnel change at Old Trafford, it is perhaps unsurprising that Fergie is looking to replace the ageing Van der Sar and the inconsistent Foster (the latter having lost his place on the bench recently to 20 year old Ben Amos) whilst keeping Tomasz Kuszczak on at the club as an able deputy.

Ben Foster would be available for around £4 million, which would represent fairly good value for a keeper who is undoubtedly talented, young by goalkeeping standards and surely has a point to prove after some much-criticised displays between the United sticks. His morale seems to be very low and he would surely benefit from a prolonged stint of first-team football, as Joe Hart has at Birmingham City – but I can’t see him getting that at Man Utd any time soon.

Maybe a move away would be the best bet for the former Watford stopper, as with the World Cup in South Africa coming over the horizon quickly, Foster needs to find form fast to secure his plane ticket – whether that be at Old Trafford or not.

Don’t get it. Latelty Kuszczak proved his worth to MU, and although he has still things to improve, he is far closer to be the next one after VdS retires than any of the targets You’ve mentioned. You don’t think that the Pole has any chance to be future no 1 between MU’s sticks?

@Clasher: Don’t get me wrong, I like Kuszczak and I think he is a perfectly good goalkeeper (He would be first choice at a lot of other Prem teams) but I just can’t see him holding on to that No. 1 shirt if a ‘bigger’ name joins Man Utd.

  3. Ryan says:

I agree that Kuszczak is good but he is about 28 years old and Utd need a younger replacement such as Lloris or Neuer and sell Foster for 4m
Der Sar will retire and keep Kuszczak until he retires or maybe loan out Foster

  4. Hirsty says:

Should add Akinfeev to that list…

  5. K says:

Yeah agree with Hirsty. Akinfeev shouldn’t even be on the list, should have bought him already

Remember though we have as they mentioned got Ben Amos so I think
    foster out for £5 million
    Kuszczak out for £5 million
    Lloris in for £10 million
    Neuer in for £10 million
    Akinfeev in for £12 million
Also Van Der Sar to retire
