Chelsea 2-3 Manchester United – Premier League – 28th October 2012

Bloody hell – what a game! This clash of two of the Premier League’s really big guns produced a load of goals, cards and talking points as United came out on top, albeit after some dodgy refereeing.

Right, firstly, the performance of Robin Van Persie has to be singled out. The Dutchman had a hand in the opening goal, when his shot came back off the post only for David Luiz to deflect it back into the Chelsea goal. The former Gunner then fired home from an Antonio Valencia cross to put the visitors 2-0 up after just 12 minutes. Indeed, throughout the game, his touch and movement were exquisite.

Juan Mata was also in fine form, bending home a superb free-kick to get one back for the Blues just before half-time and then having a hand in Ramires’ equaliser on 53 minutes, after good work too from Oscar. Just under 10 minutes later, however, Chelsea were down to 10 men when Branislav Ivanovic was rightly sent off, in a last-man stylee, for bringing down Ashley Young. But six minutes after that, things went from bad to worse for Roberto Di Matteo’s side, when Fernando Torres was given a second yellow by ref Mark Clattenburg for diving, when last man (ish) Jonny Evans clearly made contact with the Spaniard. Now to be fair, Torres had been booked in the first-half for a very dangerous high challenge on Tom Cleverley which arguably could have seen him pick up a red there and then. However, card-happy Clattenburg definitely made a bit of a balls of the actual sending off of the striker.

Down to nine men, Chelsea did their best to hold on, but eventually Javier Hernandez did score the winner, again after great work from RVP. But once again, the officials had a ‘mare, as the Mexican was clearly offside for the goal.

Objects were thrown onto the pitch by the disgruntled Stamford Bridge crowd while, in all the hullabaloo, a steward even fell and twisted his knee.

The result sees United move to within one point of Chelsea at the top of the table. But if that wasn’t enough drama for you, it has now emerged that Chelsea have lodged an official complaint over Mark Clattenburg’s alleged use of ‘inappropriate language’ aimed in the direction of Mikel and, apparently Mata. Is this the next chapter in English football’s racism saga?

  2. Fuzzyvalefan says:

Am I olny person who thought Young took a massive dive for supposed Ivanovic red card. Minimal contact If any and Young did his usual ‘sack of spuds’ act. Add that to the Torres balls up and the fact that Hernandez was played offside by both goalkeeper and last defender and you have the complete Clattenburg effect- that is cocking up a game that he had absolutely no right refereeing in the first place. This is the biggest game of the weekend by far and he somehow was given it. If he is our best ref then god help the rest of them.

torres getting sent off is good for football, he clearly dived and if you guys can sit there and say that the “contact” from jonny evans was enough to take him to ground then you’re all part of what’s wrong with football today. Torres was guilty of simulation and the punishment for such is a yellow card, i praise mark clattenburg for having the balls to give that at stamford bridge. Also the offside isn’t clattenburg’s fault and united would’ve scored anyway seeing as chelsea had NINE MEN! nobody deserves it more than chelsea anyway so balls to them

The post gets hit a lot. “Scientists believe it may be more than ten times…”

This is worth a look. I guess RVP is finally good.

    And there’s also:
No surprise that Fergie’s mind control forced Clattenburg to make bad calls:

He wasn’t the best ref, he was the ref alex the drunk wanted. read your history.

  7. Al The Gun says:

‘Sac of spuds’ act. Almost everyone pulls that trick these days. Notice the manner in which clattenburg was dishing out cards for either team? Notice he raises the card above his head for man utd, poeticaly, while for chelsea he thrusts it forward on thier faces as if to say” here you go son, eat this” with one finger on his mouth.speaks volumes.

TYPICAL MAN UNITED CHEATING AND GETTING ALL THE BIG DESICIONS GOING THERE WAY IN THE BIG GAMES. THIS IS NOT A COINCIDENCE IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR 20+ YEARS. ITS ABOUT TIME THE REFS AND FA STOP LETTING FERGIE REF THE GAME HIMSELF FROM THE SIDELINE AND INFLUENCING THE GAME EVERY TIME. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME AND IT WONT BE THE LAST, WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME MAN U HAD A BIG DESICION GO AGAINST THEM IN A BIG GAME THAT EFFECTED THE OUTCOME OF THE MATCH? I CANT EVEN REMEMBER ITS BEEN THAT LONG. THIS NEEDS TO STOP NOW, ITS BEEN GOING ON TO LONG AND IS STARTING TO GET BORING NOW AS YOU KNOW ITS GOING TO HAPPEN EVERY TIME YET NO ONE WILL SAY OR DO ANYTHING TO UPSET OLD WHISKEY NOSE

@man u cheating scum- Calm down dear, it’s a commercial

  10. alex says:

On young there was no contact whatsoever, on torres there was contact, probably not enough to send him over but it was total double standards.

No doubt we’ll see fergie complaining about the referees by next week.

  11. shay says:

They were lucky to have Torres for another few minutes after his first yellow should have been a red. If you argue that Torres didn’t dive you can’t say Young did as both had minimal contact but embellished their falls to the ground. Can’t argue against the final goal being offside though, it clearly should not have counted. I don’t beleive for one second that the ref used any racial abuse. That is just crazy. The game certainly delivered the promised drama!

  12. Rob says:

I’m starting a foundation, it’s called, “Kick the word CONTACT out of football commentary”

  13. Vasko says:

Torres made a meal of that, he could have kept going and been through so it’s his own fault. Ivanovic should not be even risking doing that as the last defender and he should’ve known better and the non-call for the offside, going full speed without the benefit of replays I think the assistant can’t be blamed too much. Also @man u cheating scum, go take it up the ass you wanker.

  14. KingB3113 says:

@man u cheating scum how about the Newcastle game at Old Trafford last year where Ben Afra dived and won a penalty to draw the match, then Hernandez scored a winner which was INCORRECTLY ruled offside? Those errors cost us two points which LOST US THE TITLE, so please just pipe down. Bad decisions affect everyone
