While Man Utd went on to win the game, thanks to the youthful class of Adnan Januzaj, if David De Gea hadn’t kept out Emmanuele Giaccherini goal-bound header things could’ve bee so different (the goal would’ve put the Black Cats 2-0 up).

However, the Spaniard produced a magnificent full-stretch save to keep the score at 0-1. A vital moment in the game and possibly, a vital moment in United’s season.

  1. steve J says:

He had moved his feet too far left so by having to come back to his right he made the save look better than it was. He actually should have been square to that ball as the header came in.

    • Momin says:

Are you kidding? He has to move to his left! Its anticipation of where the header might come! Its a brilliant save! And between you and The greatest goal keeper ever!
I think i would listen to peter schmeichel

  2. Kalich says:

Well Thanks Steve J , I hope you get the knod to be in goal for United in their next game

  3. no says:

no if he’d been square to the ball he would have been in an awful position should giacherrini head it towards the backpost.

  4. Jonny says:

Nonsense! He’s only too far left if the header is going the way it did… if Guacamole had put it the other way your argument falls to bits. It’s a bloody brilliant save.

Quality marking by Vidic on that one. Jesus!!

  6. dtknuckles says:

    Nice marking by Vidic

  7. Neil says:

Steve J is right – doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good save. But it would have been easier had the keeper followed the cross in a bit more closely

  8. De God says:

i don’t care if his positioning was a bit off, his job is to keep the ball out of the net and he did that fanfuckingtastically well!

  9. Zezou says:

    He was perfectly positioned..

  10. Fake fnarf says:

And what if the header was aimed at the opposite post ??

^^ What a bunch of knobheads!!

  11. Jarren says:

    Wait, hold on steve J…

You mean de Gea was supposed to watch the play down the wing, watch the cross come in, then automatically know exactly were a strike / header / pass etc was going to land?

I think you’re being incredibly harsh on what was a miraculous save.

  12. Jarren says:

Plus, look at the reaction of Giaccherini immediately after he heads it.

He runs away to celebrate, certain he’d scored.

That is truly a sign of a great save.

  13. b1tch says:

Steve J talks the talk, but he ain’t walk the walk…

So, if he followed that cross, what if giac head that to the far post ?

    It would be a goal….

  14. Maulik says:

No point Jarren. Sound reasoning does not work with the ABU brigade.

man u sell valencia young and andserson they are our problem and use right player at right time

  16. Will says:

Mum afraid your attempts to find something to criticise are going to fall on deaf ears. He moved into the centre of the goal to be in the best position to deal with the cross. The outcome speaks for itself.
It Giaccherini had gone the otherwau and he was stood in the position you mooted then the ball would have flew in the unguarded net and the media would be outraged at his poor positioning.
Appreciate magnificent goalkeeping when you see it. Jesus

  17. Wilson says:

Magnificent save, credit to de Gea for that. But he should be raging at his defenders, how the hell are you defenders if you can’t even mark a man properly when a cross comes in and just stand there ball-watching?
