Sunderland 2-1 Manchester United – Capital One Cup Semi-Final First Leg – 7th January 2013

Soccer - Capital One Cup - Semi Final - First Leg - Sunderland v Manchester United - Stadium of Light

So that makes it three defeats in Manchester United’s first three games of the new year, something that last happened before even Sir Alex Ferguson as born (it last happened in 1932!). So as the pressure increases on poor old David Moyes, Sunderland boss Gus Puyet and his players can enjoy what was scrappy win at the Stadium of Light. A player who has seen it all at Old Trafford, Ryan Giggs, opened the scoring, albeit for the Black Cats, courtesy of own-goal just before half-time.

However, Nemanja Vidic levelled the scores soon after the break with a powerful header, only to see Tom Cleverley foul Adam Johnson in the box on 64 minutes. Liverpool loanee Fabio Borini put away the resulting spot-kick to ensure a first-leg advantage for the hosts.  Overall, the home side looked comfortable for most of the game, with Moyes’ men providing little of the requisite guile, save for Adnan Januzaj who can’t do it all on his own.
