Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Chelsea v Southampton - Stamford Bridge

According to several fairly reputable sources (including the Guardian) this morning, Chelsea and Manchester United have come to a “provisional” agreement over a deal for Juan Mata, with the two clubs apparently settling on a £40million fee.

That said, United are yet to actually make a formal bid for the 25-year-old, Chelsea’s bafflingly out-of-favour two-time Player of the Year – though it’s being rumoured that United may set the ball rolling over the weekend.

And lo, it looks like the transfer rumour that we all instantly wrote off as being a work of pure fantasy actually has some flesh on its bones after all.

We can understand Mata wanting out (11 league starts, only completed 90 minutes on three occasions, etc, etc) but it certainly seems a strange move from Chelsea’s perspective – especially once you consider how loathe they were to allow the wholly less valuable Demba Ba to join title-rivals Arsenal on loan a few months ago.

What say you Pies fans? Any thoughts on the…heh…Mata?

Heh heh.

Possibly a clause that allows them Rooney in the summer for a certain fee. Would make sense.

Dnt even try to sell mata to man u

  3. Al says:

If you watch any football and have a basic knowledge then it’s not that baffling that they want to sell him, Jose plays a certain way and demands specific things from his midfielders, they must attack at blistering pace but also get back at pace neither of which Mata is capable of but Oscar, Ramirez and now Hazard are. Mata is a class player but just not in this system.

Strange they would sell to United but maybe Jose doesn’t see them as a threat or subscribes to gary Nevilles view that Mata is’t the player they need as again he doesn’t fit in to their system either?

Very sad – that there’s no room for such a world class player such as Mata at Chelsea.

I hope that there’s some Rooney-esque goodwill written in.

  5. Chris says:

Three explanations: First like your astute reader who commented first said, possibly Rooney is involved. Second: They are hoping that this “rumor” gets other clubs, such as Real Madrid or PSG, to bid higher. Thirdly, Jose is being sly and knows that ManU still plays Arsenal and City this season. Since Jose doesn’t see United as legitimate title contenders even with Mata, he is hoping that he can at least help them beat some more legit contenders.

  6. Bruno says:

It’s simple, Mourinho loves United and wants to give his best player to them. It’s good for United although Mata is not worth 40m in my opinion.
But… Fellaini and Berbatov are not 30m players too so it is alright I suppose.

Anyway, as a Untied fan, I prefer to try our best to finish in the top four this season with the squad we’ve got and go for the real players (Pogba, Reus, Luke Shaw, Gundogan, Draxler, Barkley, any of these) in june.
