It’s official. Wayne Rooney has agreed a vast new five-and-a-half-year contract at Manchester United that will see the striker earn £300,000-a-week at Old Trafford, ostensibly until he retires.

As BBC Sport have it, Rooney (who was already reported to be earning £250,000-a-week at United under the terms of his old deal) has extended his contract by four years, thus tying him to the club until June of 2019.

According to Twitter and its rudimentary maths, this is how Rooney’s new deal breaks down…

£15,600,000-a-year

£300,000-a-week

£43,000-a-day

£1,800-an-hour

£30-a-minute

50p-a-second

Does he deserve it? Is he worth that kind of ‘upper echelon’ money? Obviously so – at least that’s what United seem to think.

All we know is that £300,000-a-week will buy a fella an awful lot of Monster Munch.

Deals like this aren’t done solely because they are the ‘best player’, it’s a question of viability and economics for the club.

Should Rooney get more than better players (Ronaldo, Messi and arguably a whole list of more that are earning less)? On the basis of pure ability, no. He is, however one of Utd’s best players.

Utd are still one of, if not the most, commercially successful clubs on the planet, of which is and has been their main figurehead for best part of a decade. As such, he is part and parcel of a promotional package that is pushed world over.

He would not be making this money if the bean counters at Old Trafford didn’t think it was a commercially sound decision.

It’s a business deal, not a football deal.

It’s still a hell of a wedge to lay out for a player/playa who will still have three years left on this contract when he is the wrong side of 30, both in footballing as well as image/marketing terms.

    @barf: well said mate.

@Joe: Rooney is 27, still got awhile before 30 but I see your point.

It saddens me to think that this man makes more in an hour than I do in two weeks

  4. Rob says:

His agent deserves a medal, Man Utd are suckers, Rooney threatens to leave every 6 months and they give him an improved contract.
Let’s see if he proves his worth in the World Cup for England or does what he usually does, not a whole lot.

Chris, how many roads must a man walk down before he gets that sort of a contract

@Barf – good work, Captain Obvious.

This has absolutely nothing to do with him being a “world class” player or “potentially” great, this is a business decision, nothing more. Rooney and his agent have let the contract wind down to force MU into another big pay day: he will make a lot of money for MU commercially and the cost of replacing him with a £20-30m player in the summer plus £50m+ in wages over 5 years for that new player comes out more costly.

Moyes will champion this as a victory when in reality it probably had nothing to do with him. £400k at Chelsea and Wayne would have quit – simple as that. The REALITY is Wayne isn’t going to be a different player now, he’ll be as he has been for the past 5/6/7 years. Moyes hasn’t got a clue of his best team, is way out of his depth at MU, RVP will leave in the summer, Wayne will take the 9-spot with Mata behind and “masterful” Moyes (or “dither for the draw” Dave) will be gone by 2016. You heard it hear first folks…

@Dave hey now, that’s my title
