Manchester United produced an impressive and organised display against the mighty Bayern Munich, giving themselves at least a chance ahead of the return leg in Munich next week.

Despite the visitors totally dominating the first period, it was United who had the best chance to open the scoring, with Danny Welbeck fluffing his lines when one on one with Manuel Neuer. However, after the break the hosts did take the lead, courtesy of a superb Nemanja Vidic header.

Bayern continued to patiently look for an opening and were evntually rewarded when Bastien Schweinsteiger superbly fired home after good work from Mario Mandzukic. However, late on the German midfielder would see red for a second bookable offence after Wayne Rooney made the most of a challenge form the Bayern man. Indeed, United were themselves unlucky not to go a man down after Antonio Valencia somehow escaped a second caution for a dangerous challenge.

United tried to make the extra man count in the dying minutes but ultimately they had to settle for a draw, a result they surely would have taken before the game. And while Bayern remain strong favourites to make it through to the last four, the performance by David Moyes’ men suggests that the tie is not over yet.

I’m for this time, in my whole life, just because I never liked Bayern, going to root for United.

    “Impressive”?

The champions of England, “biggest club in the World” with 11 men behind the ball for the whole first half at the “Theatre of Dreams” Hoofing the ball at every opportunity.

    I’d call it embarrassing.

Rob, please understand that Manchester Untited is not called ”the biggest club in the world” because they always have 95% ball posession or spend 200m on players of the moment every year. It’s a little beyond that. It’s history, it’s passion. It’s not shit turned into temporary fake gold by some billionarie. It is not a team that feel the need to panic and sack their manager because they won’t win anything for a year or two. Teams need to be rebiulded. What did Man United won under Ferguson from 2004 to 2006? Nothing important. Why? Because he was rebuilding. And what happened after 2006? We won every f**** title there is to win. Twice. Now that team is old and we are rebuilding. Do you understand?

Matt Busby, Ferguson, Best, Charlton, Cantona, the class of 92, the Munich air disaster. The crazy wins in the last minutes. Giggs, Scholes, you know. I’m sure your club does not have that. I rather have all this beautiful history and the certainty that, while we may have to suffer for 2 or 3 years, we will be rebiulded and be sucessfull again in the long run. We won’t go away, we’ll be back stronger, don’t worry.

***MEANWHILE** we’re playing ridiculous embarrassing football with a 40 year old in midfield and the full backs from 6 years ago without Robin and Mata and still managing to draw against the current best team in the world in the quarter finals of the Champions League, with a chance of reaching the semis. HOW COOL IS THAT?
