Manchester United 1-1 Bayern Munich – Champions League Quarter-Final 1st Leg – 1st April 2014
Manchester United produced an impressive and organised display against the mighty Bayern Munich, giving themselves at least a chance ahead of the return leg in Munich next week.
Despite the visitors totally dominating the first period, it was United who had the best chance to open the scoring, with Danny Welbeck fluffing his lines when one on one with Manuel Neuer. However, after the break the hosts did take the lead, courtesy of a superb Nemanja Vidic header.
Bayern continued to patiently look for an opening and were evntually rewarded when Bastien Schweinsteiger superbly fired home after good work from Mario Mandzukic. However, late on the German midfielder would see red for a second bookable offence after Wayne Rooney made the most of a challenge form the Bayern man. Indeed, United were themselves unlucky not to go a man down after Antonio Valencia somehow escaped a second caution for a dangerous challenge.
United tried to make the extra man count in the dying minutes but ultimately they had to settle for a draw, a result they surely would have taken before the game. And while Bayern remain strong favourites to make it through to the last four, the performance by David Moyes’ men suggests that the tie is not over yet.
