Following hot on the heels of Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw has been officially unveiled as a Manchester United player after passing his medical and completing a £30million(ish) move from Southampton this afternoon…

Shaw, who has signed a four-year contract, told United’s official site:

“I am thrilled and excited to be joining Manchester United. I have been at Southampton since I was eight years old and I would like to thank them and the fans for everything they have done for me.

“I want to continue to progress my career and joining United is the ideal place for me to do that.

“I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life and also looking forward to learning from the world-class players and management at the club.”

Thirty. Friggin’. Million. Pounds, for an 18-year-old with three caps and a single season of Premier League experience under his belt. English football massively overvalues itself once again.

Suppose at least United are spending the big money. That’s all the fans really want to see, no?

A ton of money for a teenager, but before Shaw, the most expensive teenager signed by United was a guy by the name of Wayne Rooney…..that didn’t work out too badly

Crazy amount of money. No doubt the kid has a decent future ahead of him. I think southampton knew they could hold United to ransom after they missed out on a few previous southampton players, Bale, Walcott and the Ox. If Shaw goes onto be the next Bale then not a bad investment, if he goes onto be the next Walcott then its money down the drain.

When you think how much other players are going for across Europe though 30mill does sound crazy. Fernando – 15m, Fabregas – 33m and even the likes of Matic – 20 odd from the winter.

£30m is a lot for a left back no matter how good he is

  4. SG says:

Great prospect for the future. Imagine him and Januzaj on the left for United next season. Also, that’s probably not his new shirt. The Chevrolet deal kicks in for the new season, though obviously the shirt design is under wraps at the moment.

should’ve spent the money on the last southampton full-back that they wanted.

This is what Paul Scholes had to say, and I think he’s spot on:
“The proposed £34m transfer for the 18-year-old Luke Shaw to Manchester United is another example of something which has a bad
    long-term impact.
“Clubs are priced out of this market which is why they go abroad for cheap options – they’re not better players.
“For a left-back to be worth £34m shows how silly the game has gone. For that money I want a centre-forward who’s going to
    score 30 goals a season.”

They should have paid what they paid for Phil Jones.
