Love is Blind

Just a few minutes ago, Manchester United have officially confirmed that they have reached a deal with Ajax over the transfer of Daley Blind.

The agreed fee for 24-year-old Blind, who can play in the defensive midfield role or on the left-hand side of the back-line, is believed to be about £14million.

Now, by Ronald de Boer’s own admission (a man with a fairly well-placed source at Ajax), Blind probably isn’t going to pull up any trees at Old Trafford, but what he will bring is much-needed “calmness and awareness” to United’s defensive ranks.

Not a season-changing signing by any means, but with Louis van Gaal on a mission to thin out the United herd at the moment, Blind’s acquisition should be more than welcome – if only in a numerical sense!

Just a drop in the bucket.

  2. Bestie says:

Great player, but now we’ve spent 60mm on left backs! And “versatility” is a dangerous term. Means that a player is useful in a number of positions but not particularly good in any one of them –we’ve had our share of those in the past

  3. Zam says:

@Bestie, the only actual left back bought is Shaw, Rojo is naturally a centre back, and Blind a midfielder.

  4. Bestie says:

Zam, Rojo is a LB who can play CB (not too reliably) and Blind is a LB who can play CB and CMF. All good, but:why not get a true CB and true CMF ? Anyway, I give both of them the benefit of the doubt b/c they both happen to be good young players –and in DB’s case, no English club went wrong with a Dutch player.

  5. Zam says:

You have that arseways. Rojo covered at LB at the World Cup as Argie LB’s are rubbish, but he’s definitely a CB. Pretty much the same with Blind, a DM first that can cover at CM, CB and LB, and similarly played at LB in the World Cup, as Dutch LB’s are shit.

  6. Bestie says:

The one thing I got arseways was the bit about English clubs not going wrong with Dutch players: forgot about Buttner (then again, SAF also signed the only Brazilians who can’t play)

  7. Ad says:

Ronald de Boer is not Ajax’ head coach. His twin brother Frank is. Ronald is a TV pundit. A TV pundit made the comments, not Blind’s former head coach. So you know…

  8. Ben says:

Ajax’ coach is Frank de Boer (Ronald’s identical twin, remember). But I really hope he chose the right club and I wish him all the best!

  9. Chris says:

@Ben and Ad: Yep, good spot – though Ronald definitely has an ‘in’ at Ajax.
