It’s taken him over a month to build up the courage to talk about it, but Ashley Young has finally opened up and broken his silence over the infamous “bird poo” incident that he suffered against Swansea on the opening day of the season.
The bilious anger caused by United getting their campaign off to a losing start at Old Trafford was quickly overshadowed when Vine clips suddenly flooded social media which appeared to show Young taking a globule of bird poo directly in the mouth.
In an interview with Soccer AM, the tricky subject of the bird poo incident was broached, with Young admitted that he’s still perplexed with the events that unfolded on that fateful day.
“I need to put it out there, I don’t actually know. I don’t know what happened. You would have seen a reaction from me,” Young said.
“I’ve seen the video about 100 times. I don’t know what it was. I need to get to the bottom of it.”
Of course, it being their remit to do so, Young’s United teammates gave him some world class weapon’s-grade banter about the incident by putting…wait for it…a model pigeon on top of his locker!
“After it actually happened – I don’t know who it is and I need to get to the bottom of this as well – I had a pigeon put up above my locker.”
“I walked in and thought ‘oh no’. And that was it, everyone started taking pictures of it.
“Everyone thinks it actually happened. I don’t know, I couldn’t tell you.”
