‘Wayne’s goal puts us in a fantastic position. I think that with the speed of our team we will score over there, but I don’t know whether that will be enough.’ Alex Ferguson is still wary of Milan
‘I see him do it every day in training. He’s brilliant. He is a joy to play with, a genius.’ Wayne Rooney pays tribute to Paul Scholes

‘We are not getting carried away but we know we’re good enough to go away from home and win. We’ll not be going over there to defend as such. We’re not a team that can do that – we haven’t got the players.’
Michael Carrick doesn’t trust his back four
Milan reaction after the click…

Milan reaction:

‘The third goal has complicated matters. We did play well for an hour but it was always going to be difficult to maintain that for the full game. We lost the experience of Gattuso and Maldini and they certainly would have contributed. We are in better shape for the second leg than when we played Bayern in the quarter-finals. But the result tonight means it will suit United, they will be able to play on the counterattack which is one of their great strengths, even though we will go into the game with confidence. United have a slight advantage but it is all to play for.’
Carlo Ancelotti, Milan coach
‘It’s our own fault [that we lost] because we had the game in our hands, but it was inevitable in the end that we’d concede the two goals.’ Alessandro Nesta
‘We could have won, it’s a shame. In the second half we committed two team errors and they punished us for that. A draw would have been better but we showed tonight we’re at a high level.’ Massimo Oddo
