Manchester United suffered their third straight defeat after failing to break down a well-organised West Brom at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils started the game brightly, with Robin Van Persie going close for the home side.

Indeed, the hosts dominated possession but found Tony Pulis’ side to tough a nut to crack.

Then just after the hour-mark, a Chris Brunt free-kick was deflected past David De Gea courtesy of Martin Olsson’s leg to give the Baggies a shock lead.

United were then handed a golden opportunity to get back on level terms when Saido Berahino handled in the box.

However, Van Persie could only see his spot-kick saved superbly by Boaz Myhill.

The Dutch striker tested Myhill again late on but ultimately West Brom hung on for a precious three points.

Pulis’ side are now seven points clear of the drop-zone and all but safe from relegation. As for Louis Van Gaal’s Red Devils, they are now just four points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool, with nine points still up for grabs.
