Manchester United 2-1 Swansea City – Premier League – 2nd January 2016
Wayne Rooney emerged from his recent malaise to net a cracking winner against Swansea at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Rooney’s goal, on 77 minutes, came courtesy of a superb back-heeled flick from an Anthony Martial cross. The goal secured a first win in eight games for the Red Devils and came after Gylfi Siggurdson had levelled the scores on 70 minutes.
The first-half was a rather unexciting affair, but just after the re-start, Martial headed home to give the Red Devils a deserved lead. The Swans struggled to create much throughout the game, but with the scores at 2-1, they came close to snatching a draw on two occasions. Centre-half Ashley Williams first forced a good save out of David De Gea before ‘keeper Lukasz Fabianksi headed just wide after coming up for a corner.
The victory sees Louis van Gaal’s charges go fifth, with the Dutchman no doubt hoping the win will kickstart his side’s disappointing campaign. As for the struggling Swans, they find themselves just two points above the drop-zone.
