Manchester United reckon they’ve become the first sports club in the country to hire their very own in-house ‘counter-terrorism manager’.

A depressing sign o’ the times if ever there were, United have made the appointment to help bolster and oversee the raft of additional security measures being put in place at Old Trafford on matchdays.

According to BBC Sport, the job has been given to a former inspector from the Greater Manchester Police’s specialist search unit.

Vehicles are now routinely checked as they enter car parks, and supporters are searched at turnstiles.

Of course, the last time Old Trafford had to be evacuated (20 minutes before their final Premier League game of last season) it was duly discovered that the “suspect package” found in the toilets was actually a dummy prop left behind after a police training exercise.

Turns out you really have got to keep an eye on everybody these days.
