Despite the best efforts of Paul Warhurst to gift them the win, Manchester United ended up losing 3-2 against Sheffield Wednesday in what might loosely be described as a ‘thriller’ at Hillsborough in October of 1991.

Having gone 1-0 down to an early David Hirst strike, it didn’t take long for United to restore parity – less than two minutes in fact, thanks to Warhurst’s superbly weighted through-ball to Brian McClair…

Little did Warhurst realise at the time, but he’d just perfectly set the scene for United’s second goal of the afternoon – and quite probably the worst goal ever scored by a United player.

Indeed, following a laughably bad scramble in the penalty box, it was the hapless Owls utility man who steamed in with the clumsy air-kick that allowed McClair to almost apologetically tap home from a yard or so out…

Thankfully, two goals from new signing Nigel Jemson eventually pulled Warhurst’s gonads out of the fire and secured a spirited come-from-behind victory.

The Owls went on to finish third in Division One under the player-management of Trevor Francis, seven points behind league winners Leeds United and just three points behind United in second.

It was also United’s first defeat of an ultimately disappointing season as I recall.

It’s maybe just a sophisticated way to score an own goal. But with comedy. That was pioneering stuff.
