Manchester City secured a previous 2-1 away win at Old Trafford, a result which sees the Citizens go 11 points clear at the top of the table, as well as becoming the first top-flight side to register 14 consecutive victories in a single season.

City dominated the game in the first period, with David Silva opening the scoring on 42 minutes after a corner.

However, the Red Devils managed to get themselves level before the break, via a fine finish from Marcus Rashford after an error from Fabian Delph.

Soon after the break, the visitors went ahead again, with Nicolas Otamendi netting his fourth league goal of the season after a failed clearance from the disappointing Romelu Lukaku.

United thought they had a chance to equalise again late on, when Otamendi made contact Ander Herrera in the box.

However, instead of pointing to the spot, ref Michael Oliver booked the Spaniard for diving.

Late on, Lukaku had a great chance to equalise, only to be thwarted from close-range by Ederson, with the Brazilian also superbly saving the follow-up from Juan Mata.

The game would end in victory for Pep Guardiola’s charges, with the Spaniard enjoying his ninth victory as a manager against Joe Mourinho.

The victory also sees United’s 40-game home unbeaten run finally come to an end.

After the game, Mourinho was not surprisingly unhappy with the Herrera incident, saying:

My first reaction is I feel sorry for referee Michael Oliver because he had a very good match but unfortunately he made an important mistake

However, the Portuguese coach all but admitted, in his own bitter style, that the title race is over, saying:

Probably, yes. Manchester City are a very good team and they are protected by the luck, and the gods of football are behind them.

Surely no-one can stop City now, with an unbeaten league season surely a genuine possibility.

  1. Me says:

City played really top football, ok, but only scored 2 goals while United were very, very, very poor and almost equalised to get a point out of that shit performance. With this fact in mind, if United were, at least, not fucking horrible that day, they could have won. City is flying at the moment and will win the title easily but, considering how poor United were, 2×1 is not a fantastic result as people are saying. City were very wasteful and a solid performance by United would be enough to beat City that day simple because City were so wasteful. I think the surprise is not that City played really well, it’s how poor United were.

Now, with Champions League in mind, if City plays fantastically well like that against Real or PSG or Bayern or whatever but only scores 2 goals, they get killed on the counter attack and end up losing 4-2. That’s my opinion.
