There were familiar scenes in the media suite at Old Trafford after Manchester United’s frankly rubbish 3-0 home defeat against Tottenham on Monday night.
As well as inflicting Jose Mourinho’s heaviest home defeat as a manager, the Spurs result also saw United lose two of their opening three Premier League games for the first time since the league’s inaugural season in 1992/93.
After making a point of very deliberately applauding the fans after the final whistle, Mourinho made more attempts at deflection in his post-match press conference – which ended with the United manager throwing a bit of a wobbler and walking out.
Having faced one too many questions about his side’s lacklustre performance, the Portuguese misanthrope raised his voice before venturing into well-worn territory – coming over all a-bluster while instructing everybody just how much respect he deserves and how many titles he’s won in his career…
We lost 3-0, three! The same number of Premierships I have. More than the other 19 managers put together. Respect, respect, respect!
Bit of a non-sequitur, if we’re honest.
While we’ve heard all this from Jose before, he must have been waiting for Arsene Wenger to quit so he could start citing his Premier League record.
Turgid, negative and predictable – just like his football team.
If history tells us anything, it’s that it doesn’t usually carry on like this for long.
