If rumours are to be believed, Manchester United might end up losing David De Gea, their “flower in the rubble“, on a free transfer in the not-so-distant future.
The Times are claiming that a source inside the club informed them De Gea might just have “played against his next club” when United lost 1-0 to Juventus in midweek.
Furthermore, it is thought that the Spanish goalkeeper, whose current contract expires in the summer of 2020, is well aware that the Bianconeri would like to acquire his services should he become available on the cheap.
Basically, as The Times have it, should United not manage to sell him in the summer, both the Italian club and De Gea himself are prepared to wait out the remainder of his contract before making their respective moves.
‘Waiting to pounce’ we believe is the agreed-upon tabloid parlance, with a further contract extension at Old Trafford is seemingly out of the question.
Also of concern for Jose Mourinho is Juve’s impressive track record when it comes to landing big names for nowt, with Paul Pogba, Andrea Pirlo, Sami Khedira and Dani Alves all moving to Turin on b-b-b-bargain freebies in recent-ish years.
Which, all in all, would be harsh on Wojciech Szczesny, who waited so patiently for Gianluigi Buffon to vacate his post, enjoyed half-a-season as Juve’s undisputed No.1 and then found that one of the few elite goalkeepers who could step in and automatically replace him is now on the radar.
Bummer.
