Shaun Maloney’s late winner secured victory for Villa. Ashley Young’s opener had earlier been cancelled out by Clint Dempsey’s equaliser.

Gary Speed maintained his record of scoring in every Premier League season to date by opening the scoring against Reading. Nicolas Anelka and Daniel Braaten also found the net.

Cameron Jerome was the star of the show as his brace secured victory for Birmingham. Matt Oakley was on the scoresheet for the Rams.

Chelsea went top of the Premier League courtesy of Frank Lampard’s first-half goal.

The points were shared in a match overshadowed by tributes to murdered schoolboy Rhys Jones. His parents were pitchside for a minute of applause in Rhys’s memory.

Nani scored the only goal of the game to secure victory for United, although Spurs had a decent penalty shout turned down.

Middlesbrough 2-2 Newcastle United
Julio Arca’s volley gave Boro a share of the points in the Tyne-Tees derby. Charles N’Zogbia’s opener for Newcastle was quickly cancelled out by Mido’s first goal for Middlesbrough. Mark Viduka reinstated the Magpies’s lead before Arca struck.

Momo Sissoko and Andriy Voronin both scored their first Premier League goals to help the Reds sink Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Paul Scharner gave wigan the lead on 78 minutes but Lee Bowyer equalised three minutes later.
