Yes, he does look a lot like Mr G

More proof that Man Utd are not much of a buying club these days: World Cup star Mesut Ozil, who was a genuine transfer target for Fergie, has signed for Real Madrid, officially (subject to a medical on Wednesday). It’s inevitable really – Real, Barcelona, Man City and Chelsea have so much more buying power than clubs like United and Liverpool. The latter can’t compete when it comes to signing world stars.

Ozil’s fee is reported as €15m (around £12.5m). That’s a steal for such a fine young player. It’s a real shame for United that they didn’t manage to sign Ozil; he would have made an excellent replacement for Paul Scholes. Yet another one wriggles off the hook.

Is this a case of Fergie not trying hard enough, or genuinely being happy with his squad, or is it simply that United don’t have the cash? I suspect it’s the latter.

No caveats to this deal? Like, I don’t know, €20 million more if they win La Liga and Champions League?

  2. Delboy Dublin says:

So two Mesut Ozils equal one James Milner/Yaya Toure/Mario Balotelli/Alexander Kolarov? Goes to show just how bass-ackwards Man City have it.

  3. JLP says:

Seeing as Fergie splashed almost that much on the completely unknown Bebe, I don’t think it was a money issue… I’d say Ozil preferred Spain and had no desire to play in England. Might explain why none of the other English clubs with unlimited funds even went after him. That’s a ridiculous price for a footballer that talented.

  4. Jayed Turan says:

Ozil should have signed man utd instead of real madrid.he could have been a great player at united..real doesn’t produce great plaers. but united does.

  5. Montesquieu says:

Now I hate United as much as the next man, but Ozil is an idiot. He won’t be playing a whole lot in Spain and will be transferred out in a season or two anyway.

  6. Michael says:

I suppose Jose was fascinated by Germany…

  7. Hirsty says:

Bad choice on his part. Where exactly is he going to fit in at Real?

  8. MR G says:

wheres he goin to fit in intheir formation? theyre playin 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-3-2. will he start over kaka?

  9. Nate says:

My guess is he’ll slot in ahead of Xabi and Khedira, with Ronaldo and Pedro Leon/Di Maria on the wings, and Higuain up top in a 4-2-3-1.

  10. Nate says:

And Kaka is out for something like 4 months with (I believe) a torn meniscus.

  11. Benj says:

No quotes? Its a load of bollocks.
Another shitty rag trying to get hits.
    He hasnt signed for anyone.
    WAATP you are a disgrace

  12. Rina van Coller says:

Congratulations Mesut with your move to Real Madrid. You’re still young, there’s enough time for Barca in the future – all good things come to those who wait!

  13. Tatum says:

At the moment I’m spitting blood and I could kick Fergie’s bollocks in. Is he reaaaalllly saying Nani, Anderson etc are better than Ozil, or that Paul Scholes will be able to carry the team for the next season in PL and CL? Ozil was sucking up to all the big clubs a few weeks ago, I think Fergie could’ve signed him but he was probably being cheap and hoping to get him for free in 12 months. What makes me laugh is how Fergie was talking about not seeing the player to take us to the “quantum level” that Cantona, Ronaldo etc did. Oh and Nani, Anderson, Kleberson, Djemba Djemba etc were those players then?
