Cristiano Ronaldo cheats again – how can we stop him?

As this video shows, Crissy Ronaldo blatantly cheated to win a penalty against Derby County on Saturday – let’s ignore the fact he got up and took the penalty, when a selfish player would have allowed Carlos Tevez the chance to get a well-deserved hat-trick; the fact is, he conned the ref. All well and good in such a one-sided game, you might say, but that’s not the point. Imagine the furore if it had happened against Arsenal or Chelsea.
Ronaldo was already starting his theatrical dive before he slyly left his leg in on Tyrone Mears – it’s one of the winker’s less savoury skills and yet I’ve not really seen much fall-out from the incident. Alex Ferguson should give him the hairdryer treatment, but instead I imagine he’ll turn a blind eye.
How would you stop Ronaldo – or any player – getting away with this?

    Stevie G cheats too.

So was the poor defender on the right putting his leg up in front and keeping it there completely out of reach the ball innocent? It was obstruction, and a penalty, simple as.
The whole “diving” accusations in Britain are extremely strange, you seem to think diving is any kind of “going down too easily”. Simulation of a foul is illegal. I just don´t get why attackers get accused of cheating when it´s defenders committing fouls! Grow up. I get you all hate the guy, but this is getting more than tiresome.

I disagree. I think Ronaldo played the defender. He flicks his leg out to his left to make contact with the defender. It’s so common on the continent. But Ronaldo is a clever player and not stupid enough to turn down an opportunity like that.

  5. KW says:

sorry for the double post. Of course Ronaldo played the defender, but that does not mean that the defender was not committing a penalty-kick foul or that attacking players are obliged to ignore all possible fouls against them. Simulation is horrible and a blot. But it´s not simulating a foul when a foul was committed on the first place. The defender was the one breaking the laws. The words diving and simulation and “doing down too easily” seem to be used interchangeably in English but those are not at all the same thing. And the laws have to be the ultimate guide, not vague “oh he took advantage of that leg” or “he could have stayed up” feelings which are completely irrelevant to the laws unlike the real fouls had previously been commited, and only seem to serve to put the british press/fans in a froth of righteous indignation about “cheating” foreigners. Cheating is also, and more obviously, sticking your leg in front of another player so he can not move.

  6. Louwrens says:

ronaldo gets hacked and kicked throughout just about every game he plays, without the offending opponents being properly punished, and when he does go down, he often gets booked for simulation. so i think he has just decided it’s not worth it trying to stay up and ignoring bumps and kicks. he’s just making the most of any contact, because people think he’s diving regardless of whether he was touched or not, so it doesn’t matter if he tries to play on or not

  7. Chringle says:

We could stop him by pulling his knee caps out through his anus.

  8. chris says:

hear hear chringle!! was KW watching the same clip? personally i think ‘making the most of contact’ is dishonourable and in my mind cheating, though i accept people who say a foul has been commited anyway have some validity. however, ronaldo was the one who kicked darren moore, the rules say a foul in this case would be tripping or attemting to trip an opponent, ronaldo is moving one way and his leg comes ot to a place where noone running in the direction he was going would have put it, it is EXACTLY the same as the Pires one againt portsmouth a couple of years ago that everyone went mental about. the only difference is this game was already a foregone conclusion but it is still cheating nevertheless. great player…awful attitude

  9. Kate says:

Agree with Chris. Ronaldo moved his leg to make contact with the defender, and then it was followed by a dramatic “fall”. My conclusion: He dived and the referee bought the “fault”. Yes, he’s a good player, but this kind of stuff makes me hate him. And the fact that he didn’t let Tevez take the penalty…completely selfish!

  10. Nathanael says:

Clearly CR deliberately kicks the defender, which is a foul… but let’s pretend he didn’t purposely foul to get the pk… it’s also a foul resulting in a retaking of the kick to have a teammate in the penalty box before the ball is struck. I mean, yeah, a pk is pretty much a forgone conclusion, but – and I’m directing this at KW – if you are so interested in the laws of the game, the pk should have been retaken, and maybe the keeper wouldn’t have fallen for his cheap false-start kick…

Steal his hair gel. He’ll never want to come out of the dressing room.
