In answer to the question in the headline, yes, this was the worst Manchester derby I’ve seen. I mean, it was absorbing but so cautious and even before half-time you would have bet on it finishing 0-0. Neither team could face even the thought of losing this contest at this particular time, and boy did it show. Two negatives should make a positive, but not in this case.
United, led from the middle by Paul Scholes (composed), Darren Fletcher (tireless) and Michael Carrick (my man of the match), just about edged it on points, with City lacking invention and pace in most areas of the pitch – when you’re playing with DM/CB Yaya Toure and asking him to play like Andres Iniesta, you know something ain’t quite right. And when Fergie replaced Dimitar Berbatov with Javier Hernandez late on, it was clear that not losing was more than good enough for both parties. Bragging rights on ice.
