United’s City-baiting Stretford End ‘clock’ banner

Former Man Utd medal harvester David May is planning a party in the city centre on the eve of the upcoming Manchester derby (this Saturday), which he has described as a ‘celebration’ of Man City’s 35th year without a trophy.

The party is open to the public and will cost £20 (with all proceeds going to charity) to attend as part of the ‘United Nights’ program, which brings fans and former players together ahead of derby games.

From the Manchester Evening News:

“The M.E.N. understands the Stretford End ‘ticker’ banner, which celebrates City’s barren spell, will be ‘turned’ from 34 to 35 during the party.”

Advertising the event on his personal blog, May himself wrote:

“The next United Night has landed perfectly, it is before the biggest game of the season, A TITLE DECIDER WITH CITY AT OLD TRAFFORD IN FEB. Hundreds of Reds getting together for a night they will never forget.

“WE ARE ALSO CELEBRATING CITY NOT WINNING A TROPHY IN 35 YEARS!!! HA HA. SEE YOU THERE!!!!”

Apparently the final sentence and a picture of the Stretford End ‘ticker’ banner were taken down shortly after they were posted, with May adding that the event was just part of the traditional ‘banter’ (oh, how I’ve come to loathe that word) between the two sets of fans and was not meant to offend.

When quizzed about the celebration, City ‘keeper Joe Hart kept is short, sweet and simple:

“Fair play, it’s not false because we haven’t won anything for 35 years, but I assume they are doing it because there won’t be many more of them.”

Quite.

UPDATE: May has now shelved his party plans after Manchester police and several city-centre bars told him to stop being such an antagonising little oik.

It’s such a shame that the party has now been cancelled. People I know were getting ready to phone the bomb squad on Friday night. It would have been nice to see all the ‘Rags’ standing outside the club getting soaked.
David May ought to grow up and act his age, there will be enough trouble anyway without silly stunts like this.
He will now be a marked man and well deserves it.

  2. Anonymous says:

The crazy thing is when David May lived in Middleton, he was a Man City fan.

  3. Stu says:

Despite being an ex united player, May was a die hard city fan so this is a little odd.

  4. Pedro says:

So City putting up a massive poster saying “Welcome to Manchester” is just them “winding people up”, while a former United player (who despite not being on £200k a week won his fair share of things) celebrating City’s trophy drought is him being “an antagonising little oik”. Go figure. City aren’t hapless minnows anymore, so I say let them take the abuse Liverpool, Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal fans all give each other smack on the chin like the big boys they like to pretend they are now.

  5. Alan says:

Well said Pedro. The pity here is a couple of great charities will miss out on the proceeds thanks to those poor sensitive City supporters complaints and threats.

  6. Boris says:

Charities my arse. The £20 admission fee was going in May’s back pocket and during the evening there was going to be an auction of memorbillia with most of the proceeds going to the United Foundation and a smaller proportion going to Christies. The whole event was a commerical enterprise staged by May to make money, to call it a Charity Event is a load of bollocks. Big fail by David May all round.

  7. Fredmeister says:

    David May is a hero.

Didnt he give Jordi Cruyff loads of shit for not being as good as his dad? Priceless.

  8. Bob says:

Pedro, the banner celebrating city’s trophy drought has been up for years. The welcome to manchester poster was if anything a response to those jibes. Personally I don’t care about the posters and jibes between the fans, the problem here is that May is actually organising an event in a cr*p hole club already known for drunken yob violence and then asking people to go get drunk & publicaly humilate the other fans, who will also be there… Do you not see what might happen here ffs? May is an idiot.

  9. pedmachine says:

I feel sorry for the charities but May was at best a panic buy that got lucky. He got unlucky this time for being an idiot and he has let the charities down. He should work out how any tickets had been sold and make a personal donation.

  10. vinnie says:

Is it that long since city won something, thats amazing.
They must have spent millions in that time.

  11. Mick says:

“we’re Man United, we do what we want”? Not this time boys.

  12. RedSkywalker says:

Brilliant, May’s won more trophies than Shearer, Gerrard ect. combined.

  13. I think you got your information incorrect. That supposed party was a chance for United supporters to mingle with other supporters and former players. I’m pretty sure one of the Bitters took offense to the fact that their Massive Club hasn’t won shit in 35, and wanted to ruin a United party on the eve of the Derby.

Knowing people who are involved in United Nights, I suggest you speak to them before you go into United baiting.

  14. Eric says:

End result – City fans are little babies. Cool, glad we got that cleared up.

  15. razer says:

    david may, who,s he then
