With Crawley set to play Manchester United in the fifth round of the FA Cup this weekend, a gaggle of the club’s supporters banded together to record a tribute song – ‘A Message To You, Rooney’ – to commemorate the occasion.

However, the fairly good-humoured atmosphere was spoiled when it came to light that one of the Crawley fans that appeared in the video had spent most of his time making ‘aeroplane’ gestures in reference to the 1958 Munich Air disaster that killed 23 of United’s players and staff.

Keep an eye on the baseball-capped prick on the right…

The 19-year-old has since been arrested and held under the Public Order Act and banned from all Crawley games for the rest of his life after the non-league club called the police themselves upon receiving a torrent of complaints from understandably irate United fans.

Nice one, you dozy twonk.

“The 19-year-old has since been arrested and held under the Public Order Act and been banned from all Crawley games for the rest of his life”

    Is this part really true?

  2. Chris says:

@Megaman: Yep. At least that’s what most of the major papers are reporting this afternoon – and why would they lie to us?

  3. Chris says:

good, I am Liverpool fan and hate Utd and want them to lose everygame but tacking the mickey out of the Munich disaster is disgusting

  4. billa says:

Just a bit of banter – whats everyone going on about ?

  5. The Yank says:

    Crawley will burn.

  6. babo says:

Was the recorded at the Pheonix in Bolton?

  7. JS says:

Arrested? Over making a tasteless joke?

Well done England, you should be proud.

  8. Chris says:

@Billa: If by ‘banter’ you happen to mean ‘glib, undereducated, sh*t-grinned apeing’ then I do believe you may have a point.

  9. mattbw7 says:

Bille, I’m glad you think it was banter, I guess you feel much the same about those that mock the hillsbrough dead or perhaps making up a ditty about the victims of 7/7 would be more up to date and relevant for you.

JS What kind of a bland comment is that “well done England you should be proud” It may intersest you to know that relatives of some of the victims of the disaster (sons, daughters, brothers sisters) where at Old Trafford as guests of the club the other night, I guess they probably feel the same way as you! Like as not the kid will probably get a talking too and that will be the end of it but dont you think its a little depressing about how insulated some people are from genuine human tragedy and loss that they feel able to make such jokey statements. We live in a world where freedom of speech is protected but there are limits and simple human decency should be able to inform us where the line is but I guess like this young man your moral compass has lost its bearings

  10. RedFilip says:

    @ mattbw7
A bunch of twats, deserve that to happen to them and their families just for saying it’s not that big of a deal. 23 people died.
See you on ROM, cheers mate !!!!!!

  11. wow says:

you english talk smack about the usa but man i am glad i’m a red blooded american because your laws are crap. you guys get arrested for making a joke? i’m sorry but you guys in britain are just pussys if a joke like that gets you arrested. you guys basically have less freedom because of this moronic law and i know moronic laws because i live in the south.

  12. wow says:

matthw people make jokes about 9/11 but no one gets arrested for it and trust me 9/11 is the worst terrorist even in my countries history making the munich disaster look like spilt milk. i do remebr though that terry and lampard where partying in a hotel when they heard the news we got attacked, maybe you guys should lock up the chelsea scum for life.

  13. frank says:

It seems incredibly odd to me that he could be arrested for this (granted, I’m not English). Put it this way, I don’t see how the footage alone would be enough to charge and convict him of any offence unless he explicitly admits that he was mocking the tragedy. Are those hand gestures specifically associated with the accident? Saying it’s obvious they are isn’t sufficient. If I’m ordering two drinks, I’ll give the barman in a loud pub the fingers if they’re looking for confirmation about how many pints I’ve asked for. It doesn’t mean I’m conclusively telling them to f-off.

Regardless, are all Manchester United fans who sing about Arsene Wenger being a paedophile or mock Liverpool about Hillsborough banned from Old Trafford for life? While not defending the man or his actions, the reaction to it is extreme, unnecessary and sets a dangerous precedent unless he has admitted he has intentionally attempting to anger and upset people sensitive to the issue.

  14. says:

I think it’s strange that this guy gets arrested for what appears to be making light of that tragedy but there’s muslim extremists all over England that talk regular shit about the country and its government, who support acts of terrorism against us infidels, and protest military funerals – all with impunity. I know that has naught to do with football, but from across the pond that seems like a retarded double standard when it comes to free speech.

  15. mizman says:

At last some action taken against mindless wankers who think mocking the death of innocents is “banter” or “rivalry”

  16. Greg says:

This is a disgrace! Where’s Leyton Orients song?

  17. Andre says:

You get arrested for making some childish hand movements about a 43 year old plane crash that, for all intents and purposes, affected only a couple dozen people and their families(this coming from a United fan)? WOW. I take back everything I said about America, England is much worse.

  18. Grant says:

Seriously, there’s no doubt what he did was horrible, but was the guy shown in a Liverpool shirt chanting “Munich” at the Third Round game this year (you posted about it here Ollie) banned from Liverpool games for the rest of his life or arrested? It’s unquestionably an awful thing he did, but if either of those things are the case, that’s surely madness gone mad. It’s one thing to ban him from going to the Fifth Round game or a replay if Crawley Town are so lucky to get one, but for making a (possibly drunken) bad joke, which all of us would have to cop toward making in our time, he’s banned for life or arrested? I used to want to travel to the UK, but with laws like that I’d be afraid to make a joke and end up in the clink. Seriously is this the UK or Saudi Arabia?

  19. Grant says:

I mean, you’d think he actually had blown up a plane himself!

  20. syndex says:

I can understand the league being able to ban him from matches (right of service is reserved) but isn’t it against the laws protecting freedom of speech (yes I get it is a hand action) to arrest him. I know that germany do have a law against the nazi salute but it is a really awkward and specific piece of legistlation methinks that the police have probably arested him for D & D and not any incitement law.

  21. mattbw7 says:

Its not a question of whether he was arrested its a question of is this acceptable, where is your evidence of Terry & Lampard laughing and joking about 9/11 you only have supposition, as for UTD fans singing Hillsborough chants I deplore those also but to lump in the Arsene Wenger Paedophole chants into this discussion is worng, not saying they aren’t disgusting but no one died.

And yes I do believe anyone caught singing songs of this nature should be banned from attending matches, just because people make jokes about 9/11 it doesn’t mean we should just accept it does it.

The other thing is what is Crawley Town fan doing having such a deep hatred of United that he thinks this is ok, what a prat,

  22. Chris says:

@Syndex: The official line is that he was ‘arrested and held under the Public Order Act, on suspicion of causing harassment, alarm or distress’ if that helps.

  23. Jimbo says:

All I can say is I’m glad I’m not an yank. you lot aren’t doing yourselves any favours

  24. Jesse says:

@mattbw7 February 17, 2011 at 11:18 am: Mate everyone other group of fans hate united haha

  25. shay says:

Maybe you could not be arrested for this in the states, but if you did the same thing at a game, you definitley could. It’s called incitment to riot. There are limits to free speech, even here in the USA.

  26. Tom Jones says:

Get over it Manure fans! It’s over 50 years ago and n one gives a shit.
