As a mark of their gratitude, yesterday saw a truly exemplary gesture on Manchester United’s part with the club marking Sir Alex Ferguson’s 25th anniversary by renaming the North stand at Old Trafford the ‘Sir Alex Ferguson Stand’ – which is quite possibly the highest and most notable accolade a club can give to one of it’s legends, and was made all the more poignant by the fact that United kept it schtum until the man himself took to the pitch before yesterday’s game against Sunderland…

that’s gonna be awkward everytime he’s on the touchline for a while

Poignant? Exemplary? Who the hell cares.

Ferguson knows what he’s done at United, take a team which had been mediocre at best before his take-over and turned them into the Liverpool of the 21st Century.

well, obviously lots of people care “Mr. Sparkle.” i’m no Man U fan, but it’s a cool gesture. he’s done a lot and that stand’s going to last longer than he is. that’s, in part, why it’s important.

No offense, but naming places or objects after people (especially when they’re still alive) is a very Soviet thing to do. Lenin and Stalin did it, not to mention Mao, Ho Chi Minh and everyone’s favourite Eternal President Kim.

So, I apologize if I don’t share the enthusiasm for that notion. His record stands rather clear as it is, I doubt naming a stand after him is giving him any more honour than having all those League Titles, European Championships and FA Cup’s on his shelf at home. I doubt the man needs any more accolades, and if he even did, you can always rename the stand when he retires and not when he’s still kicking around and looking like he’ll live into the next century.
