Congratulations to Helena Costa who has today become the first ever female manager in the men’s professional game after taking over at the helm of French Ligue 2 side Clermont Foot.

Costa, who is 36-years-old, Portuguese and started her coaching career at Benfica and has most recently been in charge of both the Qatar and Iran women’s national sides, was appointed by Clermont and will take over sole charge of first-team affairs at the club as of next season – as confirmed by an official statement released via the club’s website earlier this morning.

We’d like to think we speak on behalf of the Pies faithful when we wish her the very best of luck!

Nice to see Celtic jump on the bandwagon and issue a statement congratulating her, as a former Celtic scout :D

I consider myself liberal and in favour of social progression. However, I just cant get my head round this. I mean, there is no reason why a woman cant me a manager just like a man, but… I just can digest this…

This is a fantastic step forward in the beautiful game. Many congratulations to Helena Costa! :D

Refreshing to see this step being taken by a team & for football in general…All the Best to her

  6. Raposa says:

This is fantastic, i hope Helena Costa is taken seriously, as she deserves to be and is successful too.

  7. Maria says:

So there are more female managers in France than black managers in England.

For shame (looking at you Norwich).

  8. Kingsland101 says:

@Maria: Not stirctly true, but good point, although you can hardly blame Norwich for firing the only black manager in the PL when most clubs have never had one at all.

I hope she does well though. It would be great if she got headhunted for a bigger club due to her success.
